An Alternative to Restting Preferences with CC

    Trevor Dennis Community Member

Oh dear.  A new layout to learn....  :-(

I watched an Adobe TV tutorial by RC on the CC Sync feature today, and it gave me an idea about resetting Preferences, which is something I am having to do more with CC than with previous versions.  The trick is to have Sync set to 'Keep Remote settings'. Get everything the way you want it, and go Edit > Sync Settings > Sync Settings Now, which will upload everything to the cloud.  I'm assuming it will only save changes after the first save, or at least hoping, because I have >200Mb of brushes.  I'm also assuming it won't save your workspace, as that is going to be unique to each system if you have two installations.

So when things play up — and the brush panel seems to be the cause of several of my glitches, so maybe a clue there — you go to Sync Settings Now, and it will download your Preferences etc. from the Cloud exactly how you like them.

Note: I have not tested this yet, but I expect a good few people are already doing this, so perhaps they could give us some feedback?   Before today, I have only been syncing type faces via Typekit, which is another CC feature I just love.

Trevor, did you also lose your pm inbox? I can't find my personal messages anywhere. And I lost my discussion history list as well.

And why can't we set this new forum layout to a dark one? It's awfully bright.

Argh, even my name is spelled all wrong now in my profile.

            Hi Trevor,

The Sync Settings feature doesn't have a complete way of restoring all your settings, because there are machine specific settings which are not included (like Performance settings). Also, 'Keep Remote settings' is only for when you run into conflicts and doesn't guarantee that you'll always pull the settings from the server.

            regards,

            steve

              <sigh>

This had finally started to look like a functional forum, with most of the silly extras gradually stripped off, thank god. Only the MVPs remained, which - nothing personal - always seemed to me a fundamentally unsound idea. Status markers, in whatever form, always rubs me the wrong way.

And now we're back to square one again...I really don't need this to be another "social medium". But I get the feeling I'm trying to swim upstream.

As for the name, it seems that you now see your own name when logged in, but others just see the screen name. You're still Herbert2001 here.

Thanks for the heads up Steve.  It was a nice idea while it lasted.

I found my PMs.  Click on the little picture icon, top right corner, and choose Inbox and activity.  The little pencil icon next to it lets create a new PM.

Anyone worked out how to upload images to threads?  The video icon is OK, but camera icon is greyed out for me in Firefox.  I'll try another browser.

[EDIT]  Ahhh... found EDIT in the Actions drop down, bottom left corner.

While I do sync settings there are more to Adobes Preferences then that so I also backup  up my Photoshop Preference+ and its a very simple thing to do on a windows system with a few mouse clicks in the windows file explorer.  Its a right click click copy followed by a right click click paste.

Recovery is simple in the File Explorer.  Two renames of folders and the a repeat of the above.  You loose nothing for you have all the updated you have made in the renamed bad folder and may be able to move then to the restored preferences.
