1. Re: Trimmed project - not enough application memory
Jeff Bellune May 7, 2014 7:05 AM (in response to dkmiles)What's the source video's codec? If it's a temporally-compressed codec like H.264, then the Project Manager will create full duplicate copies of the original clip for each of the clip instances used in your project. That can get out of hand very quickly.
Cheers,
Jeff

dkmiles May 7, 2014 7:11 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Thanks for the reply Jeff.
There's a variety of media from different sources, much of it is AVCHD. A friend was telling me that the .mts files in the AVCHD codec could do exactly what you're describing with the H264.
Do you know of any way to work around this to create a manageable project file? (all the original media in this project is more than a terabyte which is why I'm trying to trim it.)
Thanks,
Doug

3. Re: Trimmed project - not enough application memory
Jeff Bellune May 7, 2014 7:18 AM (in response to dkmiles)You're welcome. AVCHD is a special flavor of H.264, so all that makes sense.
I thnk the best you can do is to twirl open all of your bins in the Project panel, then set the Project panel to sort by Video or Audio usage. Select all of the media that isn't used and then run the Make Offline command. Choose the option to delete the actual media files. Then delete all of the offline project items.
Cheers,
Jeff

4. Re: Trimmed project - not enough application memory
dkmiles May 7, 2014 7:28 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Thanks Jeff.
So for future reference it seems like the better way to go with something like this project would be to transcode all the media to ProRes or similar so that it could be trimmed later.
(one of the reasons for going with Premier on this was to avoid having to transcode the media, but I see now that has its limitations)
Thanks,
Doug

Jeff Bellune May 7, 2014 7:31 AM (in response to dkmiles)You could also help yourself and many other editors who run into this issue by requesting that Pr change the way trimming temporally-encoded media is handled.
