Your question doesn't really explain much of what you need to achieve. I don't know what a "basic cross image" is, sorry.
After Effects is a rather complex application, and you will have far more satisfaction if you start at the beginning and learn the basics before jumping in too deep.
Thank you for both of your reponses and I will try and be clearer:
what I want to acheive is a HD motion graphic of text which will almost spin onto the screen letter my letter and then a become static word. Behind this I would like to place a moving image clip.
By 'basic cross image' what im looking to do is use a cruifix shape instead of a 't' on the text.

There are text animation presets that may do what you want: you should check them out.
Just use your "moving animation clip" as the bottom layer of the comp, and you should be good to go.
To make a cross, you can either use a shape layer or mask a solid.
And if this AE-101 lingo reads like Greek to you, take Andrew's advice and begin at the beginning. You may be antsy to get going, but doing so leads to AE frustration.
