lightroom will not accept caches on different drives for multiple catalogs on different drives

I have three catalogs:  one for my work files, one for botanical pictures (>200,000 pictures on a network drive) and one for everything else (about 90,000 pics). (i have been forced into this because the keyword files for each set are very large and interfere with the keyword files for the other files.)   Lightroom has become very slow, so  I keep the catalogs on different drives, some ssd, some not.  I read that you should keep the cache with the catalog.  so i changed my preferences to do this.  but lightroom insists on using the last cache.  so if i switch to my work catalog from my botanical catalog, Lightroom still uses the botanical cache.  is there any way to fix this?

(I believe i am using lightroom 64 bit but the title bar only shows lightroom.)

What cache are you talking about? which preference?

I mean, the only "true" caches I know of are:

ACR cache, whose location is fixed, and

Preview cache, which is *always* with the catalog (unless you go out of your way to link to another drive).
(there is also a "negative" cache, but it's not really exposed to the normal user..).

So, I'm assuming you are talking about the preference to keep presets with catalog, no? But then it still isn't clear what the problem/issue is, or what is the observation about cache usage: "lightroom insists on using the last cache" - what does that mean, how have you concluded it, what did you see?...

You're not confusing presets with a cache are you?

          _store_presets_with_this_catalog.gif

Is this the preference you're talking about?

Hi, i go to edit-preferences - file handling - camera raw cache settings. and i can choose the location, the size and also can purge the cache. that is the cache i am talking about.  it appears that if i create separate folders for the lightroom catalogs and try to create a separate cache for each catalog in its own folder, lightroom simply accepts the most recent entry as the cache for all catalogs.

i have temporarily solved this problem by putting all of the catalogs in one folder on an otherwise empty ssd drive.  this means that the maximum size for the cache is between 40 and 60 gb, but this seems to work and putting all of the catalogs in one folder seems also to have greatly speeded up lightroom.  it would have been nice if they had explained this quirk

Gotcha (and although I mispoke - it's not "fixed", it is (once set up), the same for all catalogs - i.e. it's not a catalog preference (setting), but a Lightroom (application) preference.

Note: As of Lr4, cache entries are tiny compared to previous Lr versions - if you purge the cache, then check it in a few weeks, I doubt you'll have much more than a few GB in it, unless you have a huge catalog and have done tons of raw editing. Note: if you use DNG with fast-load data for all your raws, the cache will remain forever empty. But cache entries used to be several MB per raw file, now they are closer to 1 MB or less, on average - so if you needed 50G before consider 10G may be more than enough now (maybe 20G if you have tons of raws..). The days of 100G caches are over...

              Cheers,

              Rob
