.MP4 files import into Premiere 12 as audio only

    chosstronaut

I've never had this problem before. Today when I tried to import certain .MP4 files off an external hard drive, where the video was recorded with a GoPro HERO3. Half of the files import into Premiere 12 as audio only and the video does not show up. It seems to be only the files that had a .THM file that accompanied them. For some reason only that half of the files on the seemed to have a .THM file accompanying them.  I re-installed Premiere, and that didn't help.

I also moved the files to the computers hard drive and tried to import them from there, and also directly from the GoPro, both times I had the same results with no video.

What are the properties of your .mp4 file?

            Video compression

            Audio compression

            Frame Size

            Frame Rate

            Interlaced or Progressive

            Pixel Aspect Ratio

Do you see any association (video vs no video in Premiere Elements) between those files that are accompanied by .THM files and those that are not? From what I have read, those .THM files are just for thumbnails.

            http://www.goprofanatics.com/gopro-hd-hero3/3896-what-lrv-thm-gopro-files.html

Can you rename the file extension of one of the .THM files from .THM to .jpg and then import the .jpg into Premiere Elements so that you can view it?

            More later.

So this is what it shows:1.dib

But what is odd, is other videos lacking the same details work just fine in Premiere 12, and all of the files play properly in VLC media player.

And your right, when you change the .THM file to .JPG it turns into an thumbnail image file.

              Thanks!

                Thanks for the reply.

I think that we need more information about GoPro files. The screenshot was a good idea, but did not show important areas like frame size, frame weight, video compression...

Are these files the 4K or 2.7K resolutions or other If so, are the problematic ones the 4K resolution files? What is the setting that you are using on the GoPro camera and same or varied?

If you want to try to post a sample of a problem file via a Dropbox link posted in your thread, that would OK. But, let us see if an exchange of information in the thread will lead us to the answers.

                  Hey ATR,

                  Thanks again.

I can not seem to figure out how to find out any of the information you requested. Normally it would show up in that properties section correct?

I've never switched the setting on the camera except to and from the inverted capture setting when the camera itself is mounted upside down. But that doesn't seem to be the issue. The only difference in the files that work and will not work in Premiere from what I recorded yesterday is that the ones that do not work all had a .THM file saved with them Otherwise I can see no difference.

Edit: Actually the one other difference in the files that will not work vs. the ones that do, is the ones that don't are all named GOPR0002, GOPR0003, GOPR0004, GOPR0005, GOPR0006, and the ones that work are named GP010003, GP010004, GP010006, GP020006, GP030006.  But they where recorded in this order: GOPR0002, GOPR0003, GP010003, GOPR0004, GP010004, GOPR0005, GOPR0006, GP010006, GP020006, GP030006.

I have one file from the batch of non working files that is just a 1.5 sec clip at 11.7 MB I could easily e-mail or upload somewhere.

                    Thanks for the additional information.

Please see if you can download and install the free MediaInfo (properties readout program) so that we can get a closer look at those files with the problem and those without.

MediaInfo | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net

Just be careful in the download so that you do not pick up any carry alongs with the MediaInfo. Those carry alongs create all sorts of browser problems. But MediaInfo should give us the information needed. When you look at the properties of your files using it, be sure to be working its "Tree View" - if you are not in the "Tree View" intitially, then go to View Menu/Tree Menu to open that view.

I am thinking about the pros and cons of the clip sending. Dropbox is a good vehicle for that, but I do not use Dropbox and am not sure how to set it up. I can open the sending, but it is the setting up of the Dropbox link that I have not worked with.

I am doing some Googling searches to figure out why some of your files from the same camera start with GOPRO and GOP.

Looks like you are working with 4K video resolution.

I have just sent you a private message by the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum private message system.

Please let me know if you receive it. I am still finding my way around this major updated Adobe Premiere Elements Forum.

Please take a look at the following recent thread on GoPro 2.7K and 4K

                            troubles importing 4k?

I can see it applying if all your 4K were behaving poorly. But, in your case, it is just some. Nonetheless, please review that link below to see if there is any informatnion in it that helps you.

                            Thanks.

                              Good news and bad news.

Your 23 seconds sample (starting with GPO), played back great in my Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit. I do not recall you mentioning what computer operating system on which you are running your Premiere Elements 12. I can retest if necessary using Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1 64 bit. If necessary even Premiere Elements 12 on Windows XP 32 bit.

If you have not already, please download the sample that you sent and determine if that specific sample works now for you (even though you meant that to be representative of the batch of .mp4 that had problems in your Premiere Elements 12).

Typically issues that present with no video are immediately targeted for the video card driver update type questions. But, I am not going there since some of your videos are fine, some not so fine. But, you could confirm that your video card/graphics card driver is up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card.

Have you ruled in or out that this current audio issue is a "batch" type thing that is absence in subsequent recording session products?

I will think about this some more. Please let us know how you do with a look at the sample that was sent.

                              More later.

                              Thanks for the follow ups.

In post 11, I reported that I had no problems working with your GPO30006.mp4 in Premiere Elements 12 Windows. I thought that was the sample of the file  which would import audio only for you in Premiere Elements 12.  You have now pointed out that this GPO30006.mp4 was one of your no problem files. So, good news, we agree that GPO30006.mp4 is presenting in Premiere Elements 12 as a supported file video and audio.

Your file GOPR0005.mp4 which you are confirming as the problem file (audio only import into Premiere Elements 12) has now been looked at.

                                1. There is no problem playing it in Windows Media Player or QuickTime Player. And, I am not picking up on any significant differences in the properties readout programs, MediaInfo or gspot, in comparing it to GPO30006.mp4.

                                2. But, I am confirming that your GOPR0005.mp4 imports audio only into my Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7 Professional SP2 64 bit.

In Premiere Elements 12, after import of the file into Project Assets, I believe that I may have picked up on the core of the problem. I am offering that it is probably the creation of the timecode in the camera or some unexplained glitch in Premiere Elements 12's reading of the file's timecode. See the following screenshot, and note the timecode readout below the Project Assets' thumbnail for

                                a. GOPR0005.mpg4 (audio only)

                                b. GRO30006.mpg4 (works)

                                c. HandBrake converted "a".mp4 (works)

                                ProjectAssetsDemo.JPG

My suggestion is to take the GOPR0005.mp4 into HandBrake, just go to the Video Tab, and set for

                                Video Codec: H.264 (x264)

                                Frame Rate: Same As Source

dot the Constant for the Frame Rate

Then hit the Start and watch for the Queue Finished in the progress bar at the bottom of the HandBrake workspace.

Please check all this out on a problem clip with a duration of more than 1 second.

We will be watching for your results.

                                Thanks.

Great, great news. Great job of supplying the details necessary to resolve the problem. I appreciated that since I continually writing that the answers are in the details.
