    Reading local files syncronously

So how do I read local files syncronously? The files are stored on a hard disk, next to the swf file, which is also on the hard disk and not on a web server.

Please don't tell me I need to do it Flash's way. I don't, because I need to read them syncronously. That is how my program is written. I've written it assuming syncronous access, because it's ported from another language which reads files syncronously, and it worked in that language. (REALbasic as it happens, but it could have been Java or C++ or perl or any non-flash language)

Can Flex be made to do what other languages can do? Can it stretch that far?
