immediately bid up Google Adwords so they'd get more hits when people
searched for information.

BruceCSI2 May 10, 2007 10:03 AM (in response to BruceCSI2)It would be nice if you posted a link to an article I didn't have to pay for :-).
I'm sorry though, I do have to disagree, as the media sources are paying for every hit generated by AdWords, so it's actually Google that is profiting from that strategy. Have the news media profited from tragedies throughout history? Of course, but that's part of their job, to report on tragedies. If there was no one to bring us the news, we wouldn't get the information (most bloggers hardly count as legitimate sources).
By the way, newspapers are losing money now, so it's not like they're turning a huge profit. Also, what the media does in buying ad words to generate traffic to their sites is nowhere near as disgusting as someone who buys a domain with a victim's name, then holds it hostage and makes the victim's family buy it from them. That's sick. -

Funny, I don't pay a penny to see that story. Maybe you want to try one of
these versions of the AP story. If none of them work for you let me know and
I'll find about a hundred other sources of it:
http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2007/04/18/media_mine_web_searches_for_ readers/
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/04/18/financial/f111642D30.DTL
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/312208_vatechkeywords19.html
http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070418/virginia_tech_web_keywords.html?.v=1
I'm not going to get into a discussion of which is worse. It's not
important. They're all making money off tragedy in their own ways.

It'll be ongoing business for every tragedy from now until the world ends.
"Nine-eleven they did it, Katrina they did it, the tsunami in southeast Asia
they did it."
There are still ways to circumvent this though.
Instead of buying thepersonsname.com from a profiteer, the family could
register a-version-of-the-loved-one's-name.com.
Profiteers cannot possibly register every possible variation.

On another note, I read somewhere that the Virginia Tech murderer was a

play computer games, so I'm not up on those things. -

That's true; 9/11 was the best thing that ever happened to the
Republican Party (and Democrats, too, actually), and they're still
profiting from it. If you can't beat'em, join'em. :)

Really, can you blame Democrats for trying to profit from a tornado
after watching Republicans get rich off 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina?

Oh please do elaborate. Was it the Republicans that produced
Farenheit 11 a basically false film that made big bucks? Was it
the Republicans who got literally billons of dollars to rebuild a
disaster waiting to happen again? Oh, how is the levee building
going in NO? Ah, billions spent and it ain't happening! One
thing you can say about the KS victims, they helped each other
rather than standing their screaming and crying and expecting the
government to show up over night. The KS victims got 20 minutes
warning; Katrinia victims got DAYS of warning. KS victims didn't
have a mayor who refused evacuation by train and left school buses
in the low lands.
I also find it amazing that anyone from any party would in any
way justify a Governor of a state, holding back assistance for
disaster victims based on politics - regardless of any perceived
wrongs by anyone else. Don't you see there is NO excuse? How
pathetic.

Powerpoint isn't violent, but if you have to use it, it turns you violent.

Frankly, I thought the movie was boring because it did little more than
repeat facts that were well known to all but the biggest dummies in the
land.

Ah, blame the victims. You've obviously never lived in a big city...or
been poor and lived in a big city.

You mean the Kansas victims were evacuated by train and school buses???
Where were they taken? I'll bet they were hosted by Barbara Bush in Houston!

I'm not even sure yet if all the facets of your story are verifiable.
Sounds a bit contrived to me. How pathetic indeed.

Maybe that's the impetus for our country to finally get bullet trains...so
we can evacuate people in the path of an oncoming tornado!
I've only been in one real tornado. I was in gradeschool. The teachers came
in and said "there's a tornado coming. Run home as fast as you can."
In hindsight, methinks that wasn't the best prepared school.
