How do I select the inside of existing shapes (ex: overlapping circles) so that I can fill them with colour?

In Photoshop CS6, I'm attempting to use the gradient tool within a shape I've created.

The shape in question is the 2 overlapping circles in the foreground. My issue is that I can't seem to find a way to properly select either of the overlapping circles (the shapes have been flattened and merged together on a single layer), in order to fill them and use the gradient tool to show contrast between the dark foreground, flash of light surrounding it and then darkness again at the corners of the image.

The polygonal lasso tool is too clunky (can't get proper roundness), and I've tried the magic wand/quick selection tools to no avail. Please help! This is so frustrating.
