A white background printing gray would be symptom, I think , of setting "Simulate Paper Color" in the output dialog.
You can determine what color color spaces were assigned when the document was made by using Edit > Convert to Profile... and noting the source space, then cancelling.
Thank you for your reply. I followed your instructions and then applied the source space to the current document but unfortunately the grey background was still there.
I checked the photoshop file, and applied the same process, but it still printed in grey.
Could there be another reason for the grey background?
If I export it to PDF and print it goes away, but I prefer to print from ID.
I have attached the colour menus.

I think we'd need to see the screens from your print dialog.
Uncheck the box in the second screen that's marked Simulate Paper Color...
