Over 4 mins to start AE CC 2014 on Mavericks???????

    rimcrazyph Level 1

Ok, So I've upgraded my CC subscription to all of the 2014 apps.  I have a 2011 MBP.  It has a screaming SSD HD, 16Gb of Ram and a 2.3 Ghz Quad Core I7 CPU.   With the upgrade to 2014 AE now takes a whopping 4:09 to load. !?!?!?!?!?!?!  Are you kidding me?  (Note this is not the first load, that took forever, this is now the consistent load time).  In addition, it is telling me that Quicktime is not installed.  Really?  This is a Mac with OSX 10.9.3 installed.  So my questions are:

      1) What in the world is going on?

      2) Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

      3) What is up with AE not finding Quicktime.  How can I fix this.

      Thanks,

      Slow in Phoenix........

Check your Activity Monitor. I have a similar machine, a MacMini, and a new MacPro. All launch without problems. This tells me that something, like a firewall or other app is creating a conflict.

I've seen a couple of reports of this, and it seems to be a problem with After Effects failing to establish communication with the component that it uses to communicate with Apple's 32-bit QuickTime system (Adobe QT32 Server).

Typically, when this sort of problem occurs, it's because of an overly aggressive firewall or similar software blocking communication over TCP.

There's more detail about that here:

Well I checked the activity monitor and something appears to be crashing.  I do not have any anti-virus on this machine and their should not be any firewall issues.  Below is  a screen dump of the activity monitor.  Is there a log file that is written when AE boots that might perhaps give more insight into what is going on?

You can enable logging using the Help > Enable Logging command in After Effects.

Here are some snippets from the log file.  Obviously the Adobe QT32 Server.app is not running.  So where do I go from here????

A few other notes.  This is ONLY a CC 2014 issue.  I opened up the previous version of AE CC and it opens fine AND I rendered a QT output just fine.  No problems.  PP CC 2014 has the same issue, (I gave up on it starting after 15 mins).  I believe Photoshop CC 2014 does also as it was having some slow start issues all be it not as bad as AE or PP.

Try setting the _entire_ preferences folder and its contents to be read/write, not just read-only.

                      I mean this folder:

                      [drive]/Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/

The Dynamic Link Manager seems to be failing to start because permissions are set incorrectly on some items in that folder.

This only seems to be a problem on Mac OS.

I just wrote this brief article to summarize the solution to the problem that I'm pretty sure that you're hitting:

fixing permissions problem on Mac OS that impedes start of Adobe applications

Bingo!!! Todd you are the bomb!.    That was the issue.  I changed permissions and it fired right up as it should.  Thanks so much.  I am fairly geeky but I don't think I ever would have found that.

Kudos your way.  I was contemplating a clean build and not looking forward to that at all.
