John T Smith Jun 21, 2014 7:22 PM (in response to JAW17363)Search http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US for a Microsoft article on setting file associations... which I believe you may do with Windows Explorer

3. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
rtivel Jun 21, 2014 8:07 PM (in response to JAW17363)On my Windows 7 PC, I am experiencing the same problem--which is caused, I think, by a registry problem of some sort. I have gone through the normal file associations. For example, for a .jpg file, I browse to the Photoshop.exe file in "programs files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop cc 2014" folder. After selecting the Photoshop.exe file and associating it with the .jpg file--the desktop .jpg image still opens with Photoshop CC! Now, If I make a copy of the Photoshop.exe file in the 2014 directory and rename it Photoshop_2014.exe, I can browse to this from the control panel file associations, select the renamed file--and the desktop .jpg file then opens with Photoshop CC 2014. Note that the new Dreamweaver CC 2014 does not have this problem and both the old Dreamweaver CC and the 2014 version show up in the control panel's list of default programs. None of the Photoshop versions show up in the default programs list--and this, I think, also points to a registry problem. I had a chat session today on this problem but was told to check back with Adobe during normal business hours on Monday for some technical help on the problem.

4. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
alf9762 Jun 21, 2014 8:19 PM (in response to rtivel)It is not an upgrade but a whole new version of cc. Check your start page and you should find both photoshop cc and photoshop 2014 amongst all your other programs there, just start it from there and your program should open as normal from there on, keep both versions of photoshop until you find what adobe filters and other apps been removed in the new version.. Good luck Alf

5. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
rtivel Jun 21, 2014 8:24 PM (in response to alf9762)We are not talking about opening Photoshop 2014 directly from the program file (or icon)--but opening Photoshop 2014 by clicking an image file or icon.

6. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
JAW17363 Jun 21, 2014 8:26 PM (in response to rtivel)Yes my experience with the "Open With" dialogue box from the JPEG properties window is identical. It seems like Windows is unaware that Photoshop CC 2014 is installed, indicating to me that there is a registry inconsistency with the newly installed software. This is not the first time I've had this issue, I noticed it first in Photoshop 7 way back in 2002. The only solution I have found so far is re-installing Windows. This is usually a 12 hour process. There's got to be an easier way!

alf9762 Jun 21, 2014 8:30 PM (in response to JAW17363)It will keep on loading the old version of photo shop until you open the new version from your all programs file. After that it will automatically open in the new version when you click on an image or icon

JAW17363 Jun 21, 2014 8:33 PM (in response to rtivel)Yes, I usually like to have the ability to double-click on a JPEG file and have it launch Photoshop. I am very used to having this ability when working on my Mac. It's only a problem with Windows

12. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
JAW17363 Jun 21, 2014 8:46 PM (in response to alf9762)Yes, if Photoshop CC 2014 is already running, double-clicking on a JPEG file will cause it to immediately open in the new version. However if Photoshop is not running than it will open in the previous version of Photoshop.

13. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
rtivel Jun 21, 2014 8:53 PM (in response to JAW17363)That is what I see too. That is not the expected action, is it? I should be able to double click an image file (or icon) without the program running--and have it open in the latest 2014 version. I was surprised that the image would open in 2014 when double clicked--if the 2014 version was already running. Strange!

14. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
rtivel Jun 21, 2014 8:56 PM (in response to alf9762)Are you running Windows 7? Can you open an image on your desktop by double clicking it and have it open in Photoshop CC 2014 (or any image from "My Pictures?" Also, if you go to control panel and look at "Default Programs", do you see Photoshop CC 2014 listed? Did you use the "Install" from the cloud?
Thanks for you answers. If your answers to these questions are all yes, then I am really stumped.

rtivel Jun 21, 2014 9:14 PM (in response to alf9762)Photoshop CC 2014 is not listed when right-clicking an image. Only Photoshop CC is listed. Are you running Windows 7? When you right click an image, is Photoshop CC 2014 listed? Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 is listed when I right-click--indicating, again, a registry problem, I think/

JAW17363 Jun 21, 2014 9:16 PM (in response to rtivel)I did notice that all versions of Photoshop have the same name for the executable file "Photoshop.exe" I have changed the name to "Photoshop 2014.exe" and that seems to have solved the problem. I just hope that changing the name of the executable file won't cause other problems!

20. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
rtivel Jun 21, 2014 9:27 PM (in response to JAW17363)I suspect that unless both the original and the renamed .exe files are in the 2014 directory, you will have problems interfacing with other applications, such a Bridge. Right now, Bridge opens a selected file in Photoshop CC 2014, as expected. I will be checking with Adobe about this problem on Monday and will post what I find out then.

21. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
JAW17363 Jun 22, 2014 8:29 AM (in response to rtivel)Okay, to make Bridge and Lightroom work, I have changed the name of the executable file for Photoshop CC 2014 back to "Photoshop.exe" and renamed all the executable files for my legacy versions of Photoshop.
This still does not work.

Trophy92 Jun 22, 2014 8:44 AM (in response to JAW17363)This is not a just a windows problem. I cannot get my Mac to open jpegs with CC either. I set it but it immediately reverts back to CS6.

rtivel Jun 22, 2014 10:43 AM (in response to JAW17363)This morning, I had an idea. I tried to drag an image from the desktop to the Photoshop CC 2014 icon in the Windows 7 taskbar. It did not open but was "pinned" to the icon. I unpinned the file from the icon--and now clicking an image file or icon opens Photoshop CC 2014 as expected. Possibly, the Photoshop CC 2014 problem was somehow fixed before I dragged the image to the taskbar icon? I don't know, but it works as expected now. Go figure.

rtivel Jun 22, 2014 11:31 AM (in response to JAW17363)I just updated several programs from "The Cloud", including Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC 2014. Clicking on Image files or icons still open the images in Photoshop CC 2014 as expected. Magic.

JAW17363 Jun 23, 2014 4:33 PM (in response to rtivel)Holding down the "Shift" and "Ctrl" keys while dragging an image from the desktop to the Photoshop CC 2014 icon in the Windows 7 taskbar will launch Photoshop CC 2014 and open the image.

26. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
weavingalife Jun 25, 2014 9:24 AM (in response to JAW17363)This is true, but the files should associate properly.
This happened when I replaced Illustrator CS6 with Illustrator CC, and Photoshop CS6 with Photoshop CC, now again when replacing CC with CC 2014. Editing the registry is the ONLY thing that worked for me. I tried all the other "standard" methods. If it's not correct in the registry, no amount of effort will make it work.
I had to edit the registry. Before editing the registry, I tried to associate Photoshop.exe with a file type (jpg) with no success. Photoshop CC 2014 did not show in the available programs, and when I browsed for it and selected it, the choice was not applied. I had to edit the registry based on this page: http://eppand.com/associate-file-extension-photoshop-cc/
- Hit the Windows icon
- Enter regedit.exe in the search field.
- Doubleclick regedit.exe
- Allow Windows to run it
- Choose Software/Classes/Applications/Photoshop.exe/shell/open/command
- Select the icon that says "ab" and "Default"
- In the left top menu choose Edit/Modify
- Enter the correct path to Photoshop.exe
My path in the registry called for /Photoshop CC (64-bit)/Photoshop.exe
I edited the string to read /Photoshop CC 2014/Photoshop.exe
Suddenly I could associate files in Windows Explorer or Control Panel.

28. Re: I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2014 on my Wondows 7 PC. How do i make Photoshop CC 2014 launch instead of Photoshop CC when I click on a JPEG file.
Grape-Design Jun 30, 2014 1:09 PM (in response to weavingalife)This is exactly what worked for me.
The only thing I would add is at step 5 - (at least for me) - It was HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Classes/Applications/Photoshop.exe/shell/open/command
Mine was still listed as Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CC (64 Bit)/Photoshop.exe" "%1" - which needed to change to Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CC 2014/Photoshop.exe" "%1"
So basically I just changed (64 Bit) to 2014 and it worked fine from there.
I also removed all versions of CC prior to 2014 - it just slowed my computer down too much. I lost a few plugins for now - but I will update them shortly when they make a CC 2014 update.
