What exact version number of AE are you running (to the last decimal)? 11.0.0? 11.0.4? Somewhere in between?
What OS are you running?
What are your system specs?
When AE crashes, what does it do? Black screen? Blue screen? Error messages? If there are error messages, what is the exact text of the message?
40 seconds of rendering time or at the 40 second mark of your composition?
What format are you rendering into?
AE version 188.8.131.52
im running maveric 10.9.3
2.53GHz intel core i5
AE quit after 40 sec
my composition is of 2min , render stops after every 40sec. so i have to render in bit of 40 sec video

You might want to go into the "secret preferences" and make it purge after a certain amount of frames.
You get the secret preferences by holding Shift while clicking on After Effects > Preferences > General, the Secret menu should pop up in the sidebar of the Preferences dialog.
You might also try rendering to an image sequence instead of a QuickTime file.
Your system is running the BARE MINIMUM amount of RAM for AE to even function and you're trying to create a 4K render. (Dude, get more RAM as soon as you can.)
You should also check out optimizing for performance: Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects
Thanks, will do
I'm with Szalam -- DO NOT ATTEMPT to use AE on 4K footage and expect success with just four lousy gigs of memory. Stuff as much RAM into that laptop as it will hold.
I think yours holds 16 gigs. Get it. All of it.
Though I agree with the others that 4GB is far too little RAM to do work like this, you should be able to get the job done. The most important point is that you should not be trying to render and export directly to a movie format. Instead, render and export to an image sequence. Then, import that image sequence and convert it to you desired movie format. This allows you to resume rendering without losing any work if you do have a crash or similar problem during the rendering phase.
