    Wrong export format

    Michiel Hamstra

I'm exporting a 50*50 InDesign-document to a JPEG. But then the JPEG becomes 209*209. What am I doing wrong?

          Hi,

Make sure page size is in pixels(px) and you are exporting pages either range or all and not selection.

            Hi,

            Thanks for your answer.

The page size is in pixels:

            I don't export only a selection:

I'm sorry all the messages are in Dutch. I hope you can understand it in this way. If not, please let me know.

Is there any other possibility to solve the problem?

This is happening because resolution of InDesign document is 72 ppi and you are exporting jpeg at 300 ppi, so dimensions are getting increased.

If you want exact size of jpeg then one hack could be to do mathematical calculation for page size like 72 is 24% of 300, so document size should be 24% of whatever size of jpeg required, in your case 50 px. So indd document size should be 24% of 50 and that is 12 px each, it will result in 50 px jpeg.

              Hope that can help.

Thanks. Exporting with a 72dpi resolutions fixes the problem.

Will this cost me quality in the exported resolution?

And is it possible to create a InDesign document with 300dpi?

Very much thanks so far. I know understand why it was't working like i thought it should be.

No (InDesign documents are resolution-independent; but you can set the dpi in the Export as JPEG dialog), but earlier on you said

                  [export to] a 50*50 InDesign-document

... so you want a document 50 x 50 (pixels?) and at 300 dpi? That is 50 * 25.4/300 ≈ 4.2 mm. Whatever the purpose, it sounds a bit small.

Thanks for the answers. It is all clear to me now.

The 50*50 pixels is just an example.

You can create a pixel dimension document, so if you know what the value of the i in dpi is then multiply it by 300. So a 5" x7" page would be a 1500x2100 pixels. You can then export to jpeg or open an exported PDF in Photoshop at 72ppi and change the resolution to 300 without resampling to get 5"x7" @ 300 ppi
