Glancing through the finished piece (30-something page grayscale, from PDF), most photos looked great.
But here and there, a photo with harshly blown-out highlights.
They look great on screen, histograms looked even. The dummy proof from print shop looked fine.
Printing the photos on their own, for another job, produced good results.
Anyone have any ideas? How to preflight this problem from ever happening again?

Do they look good in the PDF? In ID with Overprint Preview turned on?
Confirmed. Looks good in overprint preview.
They look good in Acrobat.
So if the numbers look good in ID and Acrobat, and the proof looked good, what does the printer say went wrong? It sure seems like an error on their end...
