Lesson learned I hope–Never rely on storing your image and document files on a single hard drive. Purchase a 2nd external portable hard drive, use a backup utility on a regular basis, and keep the drive disconnected and in a safe place away from your system. This plugin should help recover the preview image files:
Thanks so much for the info. . I am so hopeful to get this working and yes, lesson learned. I installed the preview exporter plug in and am having trouble understanding how to get it to work. I would appreciate any assistance you could give me. I also contacted Rob Cole but have not heard back. Sorry to nag; just trying to finish this process.

You'll need to download the latest plugin here and save it to a folder on your hard drive. Here's what I use on my Windows 7 system: K:\My Documents\Download Files\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom\Plugins\'PLUGIN NAME'. Make sure 'My Documents' (or whatever top-level folder you use) is also copied to your backup drive.
