1. Re: S.O.S.! Please Help! Trying to duplicate this text effect - stuck at the stroke step!
Silkrooster Jul 11, 2014 12:34 AM (in response to Infused Muse)To remove the black fill and see just the stroke with the effects, reduce the fill of the layer to 0. Opacity would reduce everything, where as fill reduces only the object leaving the style alone, allowing you to apply a stroke in the styles.
I hope this makes sense.

Silkrooster Jul 12, 2014 12:08 AM (in response to Infused Muse)Maybe it has to do with so many duplicate layers. Top layer covers what is below it. What happens when you hide each layer. Does it make it better or worse?

PBArtattack Jul 13, 2014 3:28 AM (in response to Infused Muse)Sorry I'm late to the party, but I just saw this.
In order for you to be able to use your text as a shape (or even keep it as live text) and get these effects to work as an outline, you must use an outline font, not a regular solid font as you appear to have done. Silkrooster's suggestion re: stroke layer style will work but only if you rasterize the stroke because what you want to do is apply the layer styles to the stroke, not the font, and you cannot apply a layer style to a layer style.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I played around with it for awhile and this seems to be the only way I can get it to work as an outline without using a font that is already an outline.

PBArtattack Jul 13, 2014 7:45 AM (in response to Infused Muse)@ Noel Carboni — I will swear I tried that and it wouldn't work so long as the layer style remained a layer style, nor could I change the layer style into a shape, only a raster. On the other hand, I confess I've only recently made the switch from CS2 to CC and I've got some catching up to do. I'm not near a computer with PS, so I can't try just now.

Noel Carboni Jul 13, 2014 8:42 AM (in response to PBArtattack)The stroke and fill options in the options bar (circled in red above) are different than layer styles. That's why this works. Once you convert text to path the layer stroke will put an outline on it. And keep in mind there are options for stroking the path inside, on, or outside. Pull down the various option selectors to see them.

A lot can be learned by just fooling around with Layer Styles and seeing what you can come up with.
I've been thinking on how to accomplish the effect with less work, and it occurred to me that rather than having to create a second layer with blurring to effect the gradient color, a Gradient Overlay could be added to a group, which in turn contains the shapes with the Bevel and Outer Glow effects
Again, this is using the shape layer stroke with shape layer fill set to transparent. To turn any text into a shape that can be set up with the fill/stroke I mentioned, with the type layer selected, choose Type - Convert To Shape.
Here's the above file as a sample.
