Can not read a borrowed book from library from my kobo e-reader

I borrowed  book but I need to autorize my kobo e-reader. When I go on line and enter the serial number provided for my e-reader, it says that the serial number is invalid....Evten when I autorized the kobo from the Adobe Digital Editions program, it does not work
