1. Re: Is it possible to import images larger than 32,768 pixels in a 64-bit version of Photoshop (CS4 or later)?
Noel Carboni Jul 17, 2014 12:14 PM (in response to Shaun E.)What format(s) are you using?
Some limits have been increased in recent versions, and some others have always been able to go larger.

Shaun E. Jul 17, 2014 12:45 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)The images are all imported as 1-bit TIFFs with CCITT Fax 4 compression.
Once I import them I convert them to grayscale for some editing and then back to bitmap when I export them.

Noel Carboni Jul 17, 2014 1:02 PM (in response to Shaun E.)I was able to open and save this 49,152 x 49,152 pixel file with Photoshop CC 2014...

Trevor.Dennis Jul 17, 2014 12:56 PM (in response to Shaun E.)I am not sure of the maximum pixel size in CC, but 100,000 pixels on a side is certainly doable. It is too hard for me to experiment for you with the hardware I am using right now, but I am sure you could manage 33k pixels in CC with greyscale mode.

Chris CoxJul 17, 2014 3:28 PM (in response to Shaun E.)
Photoshop CS2 and later can open images larger than 30,000 pixels in either dimension and files over 2 Gig.
The current upper limit for image sizes in Photoshop is 300,000 pixels.
But some file formats have limits on the image size and file size.
If that TIFF image is compressed incorrectly (i.e.: some fool tried to compress it as one huge block), then Photoshop would have trouble decompressing it in the 32 bit application.

Shaun E. Jul 17, 2014 4:49 PM (in response to Chris Cox)It looks like I was able to open Noel's image in Photoshop CC 2014; however, I'm still unable to open an image that is CCITT FAX 4 encoded with a dimension larger than 32767 pixels. I'm able to open these images in CS3 but I haven't been able to open them in later versions of Photoshop.

Noel Carboni Jul 17, 2014 4:53 PM (in response to Shaun E.)Can you post one online, or is the content proprietary? If anyone could look inside and tell you what's wrong, Chris (a co-author of Photoshop) is probably the guy.

That is because the CCITT FAX implementation is limited to 32767 pixels. The file you have will not be openable in any version of Photoshop.
There are other implementations that go larger, but since it is a FAX format they really shouldn't be using that compression for large documents to begin with...

Shaun E. Jul 17, 2014 6:53 PM (in response to Chris Cox)Thanks for the reply Chris. I've been using CCITT FAX because I'm using an fairly old large scale printer. I'll have to look into whether or not we can change to a different format.

Just for reference, a set of test results:
Photoshop 6.0 does not open the image, emits this error:
Photoshop CS2 opens the image at an odd ratio after a warning:
Photoshop CS3 behaves the same as CS2:
Photoshop CS4 x64 does not open the file, with this error:
Photoshop CS5 x64 does not open the file, with this error:
Photoshop CS6 x64 does not open the file, with this error:
Photoshop CC x64 does not open the file, with this error:
Photoshop CC 2014 x64 does not open the file, with this error:

CS2 - CS4 had bugs trying to open larger CCITT encoded images, then I added the more detailed error message.
Rewriting the implementation hasn't bubbled up the priorities list, so far.

Herbert2001 Jul 18, 2014 11:54 PM (in response to Shaun E.)Photoline opens that tiff without any problems. It just works. So does irfanview. Even the Fast Picture Codec displays a thumbnail icon of the content in Windows.
