I suggest looking for more information to help you understand what Match Color is supposed to do. I don't believe the destination is supposed to be a blank white canvas, but rather an actual image.
I appreciate the thought, and I realize most tutorial examples show something like matching the color of a flower or a piece of clothing, etc., but the concept seems to be simple: take the color from one selection and make another selection be the same color -- never mind size, shape or relevance of one selection to the other. I don't understand why the selection on my source is showing up as black when the selection is definitely not black.
Match Color has nothing to do with making selections.
But perhaps I'm misunderstanding you. I'll step aside...
