Set a clip's out point on current frame in timeline?

    jaanshen Community Member

So here's a scenario: I'm in the timeline and I get to the frame that I want to be the out point of the clip. Is there a single hotkey/etc that will make that happen?

I realize that I can do this: advance one frame forward, and then use the cursor to GUI the end point over… but quite frankly that's annoying, as well as slow.

I'm a FCP7 user who is accustomed to setting the playhead on the desired frame for an out point, then double clicking the clip, it opens in the clip viewer window ON THE SAME FRAME FROM THE TIMELINE, then I press the out point hotkey. So a double click + a single key. I would do this hundreds of times a day. Is there a way to make Premiere open a clip in the source window (upon double clicking from the timeline) on the same frame as the playback head in the timeline? This will only happen the very first time you open clip in the source window from the timeline, but it will then "remember" the frame you left it on until ypu restart Premiere… even closing the clip's tab in the source window won't change that. I realize that there's "gang source and program" but that has to be set per individual clip.

It kinda boggles my mind that this was set as the default way the source window works.

Or is there a hotkey for making the source playback head jump to corresponding timeline playback head frame?

double clicking and opening on the same frame is CS2 and earlier and CC14 only.

Try hitting W (ripple trim next edit to playhead) The opisit is Q.

Aagh, if only I could use CC2014… I'm too afraid of all the freeze/crash stories I've heard and my project schedule can't risk it.

But thanks for letting me know CC2014 works like that.

If you close the clip in the source monitor first then double click it should give you the frame.

                "Match Frame" -  'F'

May differ in versions of PPRO

                Check the KBD shortcuts list

Edit to playhead shortcut maybe of interest to you as well.

Trim Monitor works and saves steps.

Check out and understand  Edit Modes in PPro.  --- many ways to skin the cat.

                  @Ann Bens

Unfortunately I had tried that… doesn't work in (the first) CC.

Thanks again for the responses though.

                    Thanks for the suggestions shootemz.

Unfortunately, match frame will open up the master clip and not the clip instance that is in the actual timeline (at least in CC).

Trim monitor is great & useful, but not for what I'm doing in particular. You are indeed right about many ways to skin the cat… I just am hoping to find a very quick & simple way to skin it… especially since I do this particular skinning like 300 times a day, ha.

Also, if it makes me sound less like a whiner, I've been editing since Premiere v4.2 and was a past FCP7 and Media100 professional user. Just a little disappointing to see that it takes so many clicks to apply an out point while editing from the timeline and was hoping there was something I didn't know of. But thanks again for the info shootemz, and thanks to Ann for pointing out that CC2014 does do what I'm accustomed to… I just gotta wait for it to be stable.

Can you explain a little more how you work with an out point in a timeline?

Preferred method: paste in my "good take" clip into my "edit" timeline from my "review" timeline, which means it has handles. I scrub to where I want my in point, double click the clip to open it in the source window, hit my in point hotkey. Then I scrub to my desired out frame, double click the clip to open it in the source window, then hit my out point hotkey. Do this a bunch of times for a scene and then close the gaps.

In case anyone suggests it, I don't like three point editing, and I'm usually the director as well and find that this method is simply the fastest to get a working assemble edit up and running especially with narrative projects.

Presently I'm using the mouse/GUI to manually move the in and/or out points, which requires some paying attention and needless to say is slower. But like I mentioned, CC2014 does what I'm wanting and it'll be great to use it once it's got its issues ironed out.

                        Thanks for your help.

Sounds slow and a lot of manual work but everyone to their own

                          FWIW

When  I edit from selects in the timeline ..

                          I  go "T" .

Edit Mode jumps playhead to closest edit point and opens Trim Monitor

Click or  Drag...preview (play around edit)...done.

                          No gaps to ripple delete.

Generally I drop the selects in to sequence from Source Monitor (I and O then overlay/insert via shortcuts)

Then I.,... 'T"  (Trim Monitor) or use Edit Modes in sequence to tweak and tighten the points.. (Edit to Playhead)

                          Still no ripple delete.

Yeah, I don't like setting in/outs from the master clips or whatever Premiere calls them. I like having a record of what I had done in my "review" timeline for when the story undoubtedly gets reshaped a month later, ha.

Also, I have a simple workaround that will ripple delete all gaps in an entire timeline in five seconds, so it's no big deal.

Always interesting to hear others' workflows though.
