dreamweaver vs fireworks jpg file sizes

    CaryW Level 1
I have Fireworks 8 and Dreamweaver 8 but I think this may always have been true....I am sent an jpg in an email. I check its size in the email and it says in my Mail app that its 104 kb. In Dreamweaver, it says in Assets that the file size is 105 kb. So far, so good. Then, I open the jpg in Fireworks and it says for the Original in the 4-viewthat it is 20.63 K.
NOT any of the three selections i could have optimized. The _original_.
So, I check my optimization panel, and make sure the optimization is set at 100%, which doesn't seem to me would matter anyway, since I'm talking about the original, not an optimized jpg, but still, it is at 20.63 k. If I click on Original (No Preview) I still get 20 or so K, not the 104 K that the Mail and Dreamweaver both indicate.
Just to double check, i just saved the attachment directly to my desktop from Mail. It is at 40K when I look at it in fireworks, in the original view, still not 105 k.
Why am I not starting with the original photo at its original size? What basic concept am I missing here?
      Thank you!

          Carolyn,

I must admit that I have hard time to follow what you are saying. Because your image file size confuse or not making any sense to me.

The question you asked in your forum question as in "Dreamweaver vs Fireworks jpg files size", it doesn't make any sense when it comes to DW vs FW for that matter.

As you probably know by that now, that Dw is a HTML or web authoring app, while Fw is web graphic or web image editing app.

My gut feeling tells me that you probably have difficult understand or not fully understanding about the functionality of Fw works.

When you say you want your image file to be optimized by 100 percent, actually, it gets bigger. But let's say if you reduce from 100 percent to 80 percent or lower, then image file gets smaller. It depends on how large of your image size as in resolution. So I don't know the exact size of your original image file as in 800 by 600 pixel or whatever that might be.

Are you aware that you could get some help within Fireworks Help by using function key: "f1". Look for "Using optimization settings" and "optimize and export" to namely a few. You need to learn and do bit of playing around with those different optimization settings.

Also, you may look at http://help.adobe.com/en_us/Fireworks/9.0/

It looks like that you probably need to go to Fireworks Developer Center and find some tutorial article on how to optimize the file size more effectively and productively.

As for Dreamweaver and Assets, I am not sure what you are saying all along. What are you trying to do with your image in Dreamweaver and Asset. I don't think you really understand the difference between Dw and Fw for that matter.

When you say "Why am I not starting with the original photo at its original size?" I am not sure I fully understand this statement, could you please rephrase this question.

          Cheers, Brian

            Hi Carolyn,

I'm unable to reproduce that. Can you upload the image you are talking
about to your web site so we can test it?

Brian, hi, I'm not trying to optimize anything. I'm trying to figure out why, when I receive an email that says a jpg is 105 kb in my Mail app, and I look at it in my Dreamweaver assets list, it's also listed as 105 kb, but when I open it in Fireworks, in the Original view, it's listed as 20 kb.
Linda, hmm, by upload file, do you mean, put the file online somewhere and then link to it here?
              Thanks,
              Carolyn

A jpg file can contain a lot more information than just the original
image, i.e. multiple thumbnails and multiple comments (text).

that figure is probably for the encoded attachment.
