Nope. That's just how it works. AE has no way of knowing anything about changes to your PSD files since the PSD file structure is not persistent - a simple reordering of layers can make a mess. Hence AE is only able to reference absolute paths with all the downsides.
I have an idea, and I'm not trying to be bitchy. Standardize your workflow and file structure by using naming conventions that will stand the test of time. Even when you are a one-man band, you have to define a workflow and religiously stick to it or you will end up with a hard drive full disorganized junk.
Renaming a file can break almost any project that has more than one file and it.. Let a few days pass and complex projects can be irretrievably broken.
