1. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
dj_paige Jul 28, 2014 10:30 AM (in response to MommaPotts)More likely you are having a hardware problem causing this corruption. You need to try different combinations of hardware (camera card, card reader or USB cable, hard disk and even memory) to see which one is causing the problem.

Jao vdL Jul 28, 2014 12:36 PM (in response to MommaPotts)> Then there was an issue because LR didn't work with my camera (Nikon D90) and an update supposedly fixed that.
The D90 has been supported forever by Lightroom. I doubt that was the issue except maybe if you were still running Lightroom 1 as it was added in LR 2 which is positively ancient by now. Also raw support in Lightroom has nothing to do with which version of the OS you are running at all. I would indeed say you have some hardware issues. Also, make absolutely sure that you DO NOT USE Nikon's software to download images from your memory cards. Older versions of this software corrupt raw files to make them unreadable by Lightroom. I believe there is some software that can fix those files floating around on this forum but I have no clue where.

3. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
MommaPotts Jul 28, 2014 12:49 PM (in response to Jao vdL)I haven't used the Nikon software, though when I talked to them they said that was the reason they couldn't help me figure out the issue. Maybe the issue was with the OS... I just know that the D90 was temporarily not supported and I had to run updates.
I guess my next step is taking the computer in to get the hardware checked? (I don't know how to do that on my own.)
Also, speaking of Lightroom 2, that was the version I had before I got 5. It's still on my computer... Should I uninstall it? Could that be one of the myriad of things that could be causing my issues?

4. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
JimHess Jul 28, 2014 12:55 PM (in response to MommaPotts)The versions are completely independent of each other, So that shouldn't be the problem. I have a D90, and I haven't had any problems in any version of Lightroom with it. You must have a hardware problem somewhere.

Sure you do.
You:
- take photos with a different camera card, see what happens
- transfer photos to the computer using a different USB Cable/Card Reader, see what happens
- try the whole process on a different computer, see what happens

That's strange. They probably told you something random to be able to tell you something that you could do. What version of the operating system were you running?
>I guess my next step is taking the computer in to get the hardware checked? (I don't know how to do that on my own.)
Since it sounds like you have an Apple and you are not a computer expert, your best bet is to go to an Apple store and make an appointment with a "genius". They can very quickly check for common hardware issues. If you don't have a store nearby, at least try running "Disk Utility" (just type that in the little looking glass at the top right hand corner). Do both "repair Disk Permissions" and "Verify Disk" on your main hard disk. If Verify Disk finds errors, you'll have to reboot from the recovery partition (it will give you instructions on how to do that but here is a webpage showing how that works Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck ), but again, the Apple store folks can help with that too.

7. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
MommaPotts Jul 28, 2014 1:03 PM (in response to dj_paige)Oh, ok. I have used multiple cards and they are all doing it. I also tried uploading them to my sister's PC and there's no issue (she runs LR as well). The only thing I haven't done is the different card reader. I guess that narrows it down?

8. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
dj_paige Jul 28, 2014 1:07 PM (in response to MommaPotts)Sounds like the card reader is the number 1 suspect!

9. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
MommaPotts Jul 28, 2014 1:21 PM (in response to Jao vdL)Jao vdL, I am so very, very, far from a computer expert!
I ran the Disk Utility that you mentioned and the "HD appears to be OK". So there's that at least.
So, if this does turn out to be the card reader, will I have lost the images I imported if they are no longer on the memory cards?

10. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
Jao vdL Jul 28, 2014 1:34 PM (in response to MommaPotts)Can you find one of those raw images in finder and double click on it? It should open in preview.app. If it looks ok there your Lightroom catalog might simply be corrupted.

11. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
bobmepp Jul 28, 2014 1:39 PM (in response to MommaPotts)I see that the D90 uses SD cards. Do you have an older Mac that doesn't have an SD card slot? All the current Macs have one as far as I can tell, but I'm not sure when that became standard on Macs. If your Mac does have an SD card slot, try using that one rather than your present card reader (do you connect it via a usb port?), because it sure does look like, as dj_paige said, the card reader is the number one suspect.

12. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
bobmepp Jul 28, 2014 1:47 PM (in response to Jao vdL)Very good thought. And, if that is the case, then it is very likely that your raw files are OK and not unusable. It is my understanding that one of the great things about Lightroom is that it does not touch your original files. That's why you can edit an image in photoshop with the option of not attaching the Lightroom edits.

Lightroom previews might be corrupted, but catalog corruption usually results in the catalog not being openable; and furthermore the photos are not stored in the catalog anyway.

14. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
MommaPotts Jul 28, 2014 2:29 PM (in response to MommaPotts)I have always taken the card out of the camera and put it in the built in card reader. It is an older computer (2009), but the specs say it's supposed to still work with everything. When I try to plug the camera into the computer with a USB cord it doesn't recognize it. I wonder if that's related...
When I go to the files in finder, the corrupted NEFs are not able to be seen, but the corrupted JPEGs are!
I'm also at the Apple store getting the hardware checked as we speak. Hope to get some good(?) news.

They don't open or do you get a blank screen when you try to open them or
do the files not have icons? It's a good sign that your jpegs are visible
though. That does make me think the preview database or catalog in
Lightroom is screwed up.
>When I try to plug the camera into the computer with a USB cord it doesn't

What happens when you plug the camera in turn it on and select import
photos in Lightroom? You should get to see the images on the camera. Try
different USB cables if it doesn't work. Also try changing the USB mode on
your camera. I think the old Nikons had a setting to change between PtP and
Mass storage mode. Just changing it might make it work. This all does smell
a little like the USB ports are bad on the computer something they should
be able to diagnose at the Apple Store but you might want to ask about.

16. Re: Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.
MommaPotts Jul 29, 2014 8:25 AM (in response to MommaPotts)So after completely confusing everyone at the "genius" bar, they decided that it was some glitch in the OS. We completely erased everything on the computer and I'm starting fresh. I had my backups so I'm reinstalling LR and CS6 and manually pulling my files over from my external hard drive. So far the issue doesn't seem to be reoccurring, but I have only done a few tests, not the bulk Import/Exports I was doing for client work.
