I am assuming that you are using Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
There are numerous techniques for adding a file to an existing Timeline content without disturbing it.
Most common is holding down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard as you move the file into place on that Timeline.
Sometimes, you can select all the clips for grouping, use the Group Command, and move that selection as a Group out the the way
to perform Timeline maneuvers. (See Clip Menu/ or right click of selection of clips.)
