New to PPro CS2 importing exporting question

Really new to Premier Pro and wanted to test it out first before buying the more recent one. I have a question about what settings I should have for creating my projects and then exporting them.

Details of the files that I have are

      Video

      Frame Width 1440

      Frame Height 1080

      Data Rate 9212kbps

      Total Bitrate 9468

      Frame Rate 25 frames/second

      Audio

      Bit Rate 256kbps

      Channels 2(stereo)

      Audio Sample Rate 48khz

It is a AVCHD Video file (.MTS) which when I try to import into Pro it comes up saying  "File format not supported" so I was using Movavi Video convertor to try and change it to a wmv file to import it. All works.

      1. But I am unsure to what setting to choose when starting a new project to have it good quality and all the correct sizes and quality?
      2. Also the video has two black bars on either side which I assume is down to me trying a wider size Im just wanting these videos on Youtube but without black bars?
      3. When I export the video I again have no idea what to put in for the settings and the quality is poor after its exported, how do I pick the right settings? as the preview quality is great!
      4. Any suggestions for good video convertors that are free?

I spent a lot of money (for me) on this camera for vlogging so really cant afford not using it. It is the Sony DSC TX200 Will check If I can change the recording settings to suit better for  ext time but  I have a months worth of footage from travelling I really want to make int videos.

Thank you for any help! I know it is real basics but I really appreciate the help to get me started.
