Even though I am signed in, the software will not allow me to convert a PDF to a word document. I keep receiving this message: "An error occurred while signing in."

Are you using the ExportPDF service from within Adobe Reader? This error can occur if you don't have the latest version of Reader--11.0.07. Please choose Help > Check for Updates in Reader and install any available updates.
