fixed epub (CC 2014) on android

    Hanne Deneut Level 1

I'm creating a epub with fixed layout from Indesign CC 2014.

On Ipad I have no problems with reading the epub.

On an Android system (reader Google Play Books), I get empty pages and when get trough the document and I want to get back to an earlier page, the epub jumps for exemple from page 36 to 2 instead of 36, 35, 34,...

      Anybody an idea?

      Thanks!

          Hi, Hanne.

I am experiencing the same problem as you. Have you come up with anything?

I have tried fixed layout epub for Android on different readers, such as Gitden, Wattpad, Moon+ and Aldiko. Empty pages, except for Aldiko, that, as I noticed, read fixed layouts as reflowable...

Hope we will be able to find a solution!

          regards

            I'm interested, too!

(Himawari can read fxl ePub, but not the ones created with InDesign or at least it doesn't bring the wanted results)

Have you test it on an IOS system?

Of only on android? For the moment I didn't find the solution, but maybe we find it together. The project is placed on hold by me.

I have tested on iOS and it has worked just fine...

I am trying to reach Gitden support, because people say they're the best for epub readring... Hope I have an answer anytime soon...

Meanwhile, I am studying this Google recommendation on video and ebook dimensions that may cause problems on Play Book. However, I am really not that good dealing with code...

Another month passed by, another Adobe Digital Editions appeared (on iOS), but still no sign of a trustworthy ePub 3.0 FXL reader on Android. Yes, we all tried the GitDens and Helicons (and ran into flaws and bugs) and searched for Readium on Chrome (in vain). But ePub 3 FXL remains dead in the water as long as there's no Android reader that can handle Adobe InDesign's sneaky ePub 3 FXLs.

Yes, I said "sneaky" because ePubs 2 and 3 FXL from Adobe InDesign can set you up for disaster in any strict ePub reader. E.g. the fact that InDesign still exports ePubs with spaces in file names, won't give you the required validations for many ePub distributors and shops. iBooks and Adobe Digital Editions seem to be too forgiving in such aspects, but other readers stumble over it or simply declare the ePub "corrupt".

PLEASE Adobe, hurry up with Adobe Digital Editions on Android ! Readers need it, creators need it, you need it. Don't rely on others to solve this hiatus.

Adobe Digital Editions is not available for iOS (which is much more prevalently used for professional work than Android). It's highly doubtful that Adobe would produce one for Android, I'm afraid. If you look at the platforms for mobile that Adobe has supported, it has mostly produced apps for iOS (iPads and iPhones).

You'll have to rely on third parties for a good EPUB3 FXL reader, I'm afraid. And my observation is that Android is mostly for consumer, not professional, use (ducking and running....)

This is a bit different, Steve. You can't really compare some of the Adobe apps to an epub reader. There is an Adobe Reader for Android for PDF and I don't think it's unreasonable to want an EPUB reader, either.

That said, I do agree that we need more third parties to get involved. Even a reader that requires payment would be preferred to total lack of readers now.

Well Steve, there is an Adobe Digital Editions for iOS: Adobe Digital Editions on the App Store on iTunes. And the reason for the current lack of Adobe Digital Editions on Android, might be for a different reason than the one for why Adobe isn't immediately porting a lot of iOS apps to Android, as described here: Will Adobe Sketch and the other mobile apps be available on Android?

As a matter of fact, from the user's and consumer's standpoint, I think having the Adobe Digital Editions reader on Android should have had a bigger priority than having it on iOS, since those users already have Apple iBooks to open it with. From the developer's standpoint it might have been easier to start with the app on iOS, to lay down and test the app framework first, before trying to port it to the dozens of different Android operating systems...

Third parties probably don't and won't accommodate the tweaks and quirks Adobe InDesign puts into an ePub 3 FXL, just to get it to work. I know, the IDPF probably won't agree with the way how Adobe kind of 'bends' these ePubs and their Adobe Digital Edition to their own liking. But on the other hand, this can finally boost the ePub 3 FXL standard to lift off, after Apple's very early and still exclusive adoption and adaptation of ePub 3.0 FXL with their iBooks.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention. While I try to keep up on EPUB news, this one slipped by, and I've noticed no one mentioning it before. I just looked. Unfortunately, it doesn't get good recommendations on the iTunes store, being rated at 1-1/2 out of 5 stars! So you may not be missing much.

I use InDesign CC 2014, export fixedlayout and I can view it with GitDen and ADE on desktop/android.  But I can't view it on google play books.  Can someone help?  Thanks.

Judging from all the feedback I am seeing I am wondering if its better to use PDF instead of an e-Pub format. I too want to publish on (and continue to on) Android (and did) but it seems like this is a problem that will degrade the end product. If its a FXL would it no be better off as a PDF?

Any insight to this is appreciated.

                              e-Pub or PDF?

I am gathering feedback from my users on my e-pub on the Android platform I can share once I have it.

Every output format has its advantages and disadvantages. It all comes down to your audience.

PDF disadvantages: No animation, more limited interactivity, much interactivity doesn't work on mobile PDF readers.

So it seems that if you use InDesign to create your epub you are "stuffed" with regard to readers that work on Android!

But I hope the ADE team is working frantically to get their readers for OSX, iOS, Windows, and Android up to par.

                                          On iOS:

                                          - You send the .epub file by mail.

                                          - Hold on to .epub file and "Open with..." and select Kobo App. (I do this inside the "Mail" App for iPad and have not tried to do it from Safari or Chrome).

It works for me but don't know if you can do the same on Android devices. Please let me know if you try it.

I can't open the file on Kobo for Windows but ADE works fine. The problem is that some no-custom InDesign interactions don't respond on ADE. I'm experimenting with GSAP to see if animations/interactions respond on ADE by injecting code to the html files.

                                          I'll let you know.

                                              Hi,

                                              on Android:

The only reliable ePub reader for Android that works fine for ePub fxl-files was the Kobo App.

                                              All other gave me problems.

I hope that Adobe will publish an app for the Androids very soon too.

Almost a quarter passed, and nothing happened around this issue.

Let me state it once more, and perhaps in a bit more threatening tone:

Adobe needs to announce an Android app for ePub 3 FXL real soon !

Until it is available, I simply won't endorse InDesign for ePub 3 FXL...

Many issues and bugs can be (and have been) lived with or improved,

but the lack of Android support is killing the whole ePub 3 FXL glory.

For a long period we are having the same issues. I recently put an FXL ePub up in the Kobo Store, bought it myself and downloaded it to the Kobo Reader app on my Windows Phone and Windows 10 system. So far this all looks fine. The Kobo Reader apps seem to be able to do a great job. I don't know about the Android version but it might also work.

What I haven't figured out is how to access an FXL epub directly in the Kobo Reader without first having to buy it from their store. I mean, can I use the reader app to directly view the ePubs i generated from InDesign.

Why can't ePub just not being read by regular web browsers (I don't mean extensions such as the ux killer Readium)? They contain already the technology to display an ePub in a better way every current ereader does. Only features like reading the nav file need to be implemented as well as some ui book skins or library themes.

Very likely the book directory of the Kobo app is synced with their online library of your books.

For me it would be helpful also to find out how I could get concept books in this directory so I can test them better.

If anyone has a solution that would be great!

                                                              Whoaa ! What's happening here ??

I noticed there's an Adobe Digital Editions reader for Android at Google Play !!

I saw a Samsung tablet was able to download it (version 4.5, dating September 29).

Funny thing is however, that there's still no mention of it at Adobe's Download page.

And I also found some buggy behavior (images not correctly loading in the page).

But this move gives me the hope that Adobe really wants ePub 3 FXL to soar !

                                                                nwjh1957

Yes, it is there and it works pretty well. Unlike many readers, it deals with the ePub3 FXL files that were originally formatted for a different screen size ratio. Quite a few others, e.g., Gitden, scrunch the text to match some part of the screen ratio, rather than scaling everything so that it will fit the screen without distortion.

The one issue is that slideshows that run perfectly in ADE on iOS and Mac OS X get jumbled in ADE on Android. That's the only flaw I've seen to date. Movies, animations and audio work, as does shifting video to full-screen. Links work properly, including to email and external URLs.

In the Mac OS X version, a couple of small animations (animated GIFs that were converted to movie files) get 'clipped' so that some of the image is lost when played full screen. But that's the only issue I've found.

                                                                • 30. Re: fixed epub (CC 2014) on android

Glad to hear such experiences, and some similar anomalies. By "jumbled", you mean half-displayed and/or distorted images, showing typical artifacts of JPEG not fully or correctly loading ?

                                                                  • 31. Re: fixed epub (CC 2014) on android
                                                                    nwjh1957 Level 1

The problem with the slideshows is that the various jpeg images are displayed in pieces with strange colorations! Sorta psychedelic! Not so much distortions as chopped up and reassembled at random. That may well be a loading problem. The ebook I am testing has 4 slideshows in it, and they all have the same problem. It's only in the Android version; the iOS and Mac version don't have this issue. Haven't tested the Windows side of the show yet. But video and audio work well.

The ePub3 FXL was done in InDesign, and used multi-state objects. The ePub's slideshows play properly in iBooks and Gitden. (Gitden's text problem appears to be that it doesn't load the embedded fonts in the ePub3. 4.4.4e was supposed to fix that, but it would seem to have not done so. Also, for this large ePub (700 MB, 800+ pages), Gitden is VERY slow to do the page numbering stuff, 30+ minutes.) So at the moment, I am working on ADE being the preferred readers (pending Windows testing).

i´ve not experiensed any issues with FX3 myself, but one client reports a custumer not being able to view the books on pc. Using windows 10 having tried both kobo and adobe digital editiones. Apparently the text gets crunched an unreadable. Anyone any idea why this is happening?

                                                                        • 34. Re: fixed epub (CC 2014) on android
                                                                          Peter Villevoye Adobe Community Professional

"Crunched text" sounds like a font misbehaving. The system can't access the embedded font, or the font didn't come through at InDesign's end. So the ePub probably shows up with a replacement font, using the original font's spacing. Which often looks like a real mess...

So I do have an idea (and maybe this already helps you enough), but the solution can't be given without knowing more specifics.

It's not mentioned on Adobe's ADE download page, and it's almost useless for ePub 3 FXL. But they don't tell you that on the Google Play app page.

We're waiting for these versions to follow suit, for almost 2 years now. Telling Android (and Windows) users to use the web-viewable Publish Online version is not a proper solution !

No matter what excuse they have or which brilliant strategy they try to sell me – they'll lose me, and I'll definitely tell everyone about it.
