    Styles missing in TOC

    12minuteathlete

Whenever I go to create a TOC, all or almost all of my pre-created styles are missing (headers, subheads, etc.). I've tried with multiple documents, and every single one has the same issue. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? I can manually create a TOC for some documents, but need to be able to create a TOC for an epub. Help!

Are you sure you used Paragraph styles rather than Character styles for these?

Wow um... no. I definitely used character styles, which could explain everything. When creating paragraph styles then, can the different styles be in the same text box or does every style need to be in its own text box in order to work? For example, a title heading then the basic paragraph text.

TOC finds paragraph styles. You can apply character styles to the paragraphs as well, but manually applied character styles and local formatting will be preserved in the TOC even if you want to use a different format for your TOC listings. You can work around that by using either nested styles or GREP styles to change the formatting for parts of the text in the headings (define the basic format as part of the paragraph style).

You can set a "next style" as part of the paragraph style definition, so if you are using a heading style and you want the next paragraph to be body, you set body as next style and it will change automatically when you press enter after the heading. You do not need separate frames.
