Hi,
I would like to make the words 'heather hall' transparent knocking through the clipping mask it sits upon.
Is this possible please?

A very simple way is to change the colour of heather hall to black, then select everything and in the Transparency Palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip and Invert mask unticked.
heather hall may be live Type or a Group of paths or a Compound Path made of the individual letter paths/groups/compound paths.
