P Spier Aug 13, 2014 12:28 PM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)Do you print single or double sided?

2. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
rsukhram@tgioa.com Aug 13, 2014 12:32 PM (in response to P Spier)double sided. There are actually more things I would like the spread to address.
Since i am hole punching and putting report covers the "visible" portion of the page does not appear to be centered (due to the 3 brass tabs).
Im guessing I can create a spread and adjust the center margins of the document but I am not sure where to begin to setup those settings (and if even if that is the right approach).
thanks for responding again.

3. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
P Spier Aug 13, 2014 12:41 PM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)Certainly more complex setting up for two-sided printing, but you could consider adding a slug area or additional bleed on the inside edge that could be included during export. If the pages are blank near the spine, bleed would do it with no special provisions (inside bleed is the edge of the other page unless you split the spread apart). If you need to split spreads, you can use the script you'll find at InDesignSecrets » Blog Archive » Breaking Pages Apart to Bleed Off a Spine or http://www.printisrael.com/indesign/scripts/freeware/SeparatePages.jsx

4. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
rsukhram@tgioa.com Aug 13, 2014 12:56 PM (in response to P Spier)the problem with setting up the bleed/slug on the inside edge is my document is currently not facing pages which means every odd page the left is my inside edge and every even page the right is my inside page. To make this more challenging my printable file still has to remain single pages for duplex/hole punch finishing.
Im guessing I can make the doc facing pages and add the center bleed/slug then export as a spread and somehow split the spreads as you suggested. Does this sound right?

8. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
rsukhram@tgioa.com Aug 13, 2014 1:11 PM (in response to P Spier)the only other thing I see is when exporting to PDF the export setting have spreads and using doc bleeds + slugs.

9. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
P Spier Aug 13, 2014 1:37 PM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)You set up facing pages in the individual files (I suggest you make copies and add them to a new Book). You will want to export individual pages, not spreads, when you output.

10. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
rsukhram@tgioa.com Aug 14, 2014 11:49 AM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)Peter your suggestion works well but I approached slightly different which is now bringing up another issue (which i'll start a new discussion for).
My current needs and approaches are:
1 - Need an electronic pricebook
- create individual INDD docs for each product. Include margins to compensate for 3 hole punch.
- make INDB doc to manage all the INDD docs
- TOC is calling on a style for content
- export with bookmarks + hyperlinks
CONS:
- layout has huge margins on right and left sides to compensate for a duplex 3 hole punch finish
2 - Need a printable version (2 sided / 3 hole punch)
- create new INDD doc (facing pages) with accommodations for a "centered" look when 3 hole punch.
- use the existing INDD docs from the electronic version
- create new INDB doc for the print layout pages
CONS:
- TOC does not reference the style anymore which is currently a linked file.

11. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
P Spier Aug 14, 2014 12:11 PM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)Did you place on file into another? That's the only thing I can think of that would cause the TOC not to work.

12. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
rsukhram@tgioa.com Aug 14, 2014 12:32 PM (in response to P Spier)I placed an original into a spread layout. The style is in the original. I checking to see if my TOC can reference filenames instead. That might be a quick fix.

13. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
P Spier Aug 14, 2014 12:48 PM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)Why not make the TOC in the original and place that, too?

14. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
rsukhram@tgioa.com Aug 15, 2014 7:45 AM (in response to P Spier)It is an original but my spreads are linking originals so the TOC is not picking up the styles of the linked originals.

15. Re: InDesign Books and setting up for single page and spreads
P Spier Aug 15, 2014 9:40 AM (in response to rsukhram@tgioa.com)I think you misunderstood. Linked files are essentially images -- ID cannot reach inside to read the styles and you cannot edit the content. Make the TOC in the file you are placing.
