1. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
~graffiti Aug 19, 2014 2:22 PM (in response to Kenny Zail)I'm not sure what you are asking here. Can you elaborate some more about what you are trying to do?
Do you have an existing page that you want to change the file extension on? Are you trying to create a new page and you want it to be a .htm page?

2. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
Kenny Zail Aug 19, 2014 2:40 PM (in response to ~graffiti)I have (somehow) repeated my web address twice, when trying to create a new address. For example: - HTTP://www.mywebsite.com/MyWebSite.htm I wanted to shorten it to just www.mywebsite.com and I was told if I renamed the homepage to "index.htm" that would solve the dilemma. BTW - mywebsite.com is an alias under another website that I have.

3. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
~graffiti Aug 19, 2014 2:51 PM (in response to Kenny Zail)Ok yes. If you want your URL to be shortened, you would need an index page.
Simple enough to do. Open MyWebSite.htm, click the "New" button and choose "Copy of current page" and click "Ok" and add the title.
Next click "Publish" and change the file name to index.htm and choose "Publish". Edit: before choosing "Publish" the second/final time, click "Choose folder" and verify that you are indeed saving to the root of your site. It should do that by default but it doesn't hurt to check.
Afterwards (once you test to be sure it's working), go back to MyWebSite.htm and choose File>Actions>Delete page so you don't end up with two home pages.

4. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
~graffiti Aug 19, 2014 2:55 PM (in response to Kenny Zail)A few other things to keep in mind. If your site is indexed with the search engines, you may have to wait a while before they pick up your new home page address. There are ways to help this move faster but it's more than what this forum is intended for. Also, if you have internal links to your home page on other pages of your site, you will need to update them or they will be broken. And, if anyone else links to your sites home page, their links will be broken.
A way around all of that is to do a 301 redirect so anytime someone goes to the old address, they will get the new page. You can look up how to do that or whomever hosts your site can assist.

6. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
Kenny Zail Aug 19, 2014 4:05 PM (in response to ~graffiti)Well I spoke too soon.
I have a curse when it comes to computers....
I did what you said. Then I went to the internet and my page www.website.com came up. I went back to delete the MyWebSite.htm.
I went back to the internet and I'm getting a 404 screen and of course when I went to find MyWebSite.htm in Contribute and it is gone too.

7. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
Kenny Zail Aug 19, 2014 4:08 PM (in response to Kenny Zail)Should I just create another page on MyWebSite.htm and then do the process again?

8. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
~graffiti Aug 19, 2014 4:18 PM (in response to Kenny Zail)So if you type out the URL as http://www.mywebsite/ you get a 404? If you are sure that you have a file sitting in the root directory named index.htm (or even index.html) and you get a 404 when typing in the above, you may want to talk to your website host.
But yes, in the meantime you should just be able to do the reverse of the above instructions I gave you and save the file out as MyWebSite.htm until you get it figured out.
(by the way, you don't need capital letters in your URL. They do not serve any purpose)
If you'd like and you don't want to use your URL on a public forum, you can private message your URL to me and I can take a look (assuming that the site is safe to look at from work) and see what's up. Or, you can use a URL shortener such as Google URL Shortener

9. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
Kenny Zail Aug 19, 2014 4:33 PM (in response to Kenny Zail)I designed another MyWebSite.htm and then published it with the file name index.htm. So far it worked. I'll give it a day before I delete anything.

10. Re: What is the procedure to add "index.htm" to my homepage?
Kenny Zail Aug 19, 2014 4:37 PM (in response to ~graffiti)The reason I used capitals, at times, is because the beginning of the address (before the .com) was in small letters, but the repeated name (after .com/) was in caps like I wrote it.
