cfmail dash problems

Does coldfusion 7 support having an email address with a dash in it. ie

me@the-company.com

I am getting this error in the log.
Invalid Addresses; nested exception is: class javax.mail.SendFailedException: 501 5.5.4 Invalid Address

This is proving to be a big problem as dealing with many users who have email addresses in this format.

Is there any workaround - ie converting email address to ascii ??

Any help would be much appreciated.

FYI...our organization has a dash (-) in the domain name and have no problems sending email via cfmail.

We're running CFMX7.0.2
