How to rotate a Matrix by it's center?

Matrix.rotate() rotates based on the Matrix top left. This is almost never what I want, I almost always want it to rotate based on the center. How do I do this? I'm using it for a gradient fill, so changing MovieClip registration is not going to help, and changing the container MovieClip in any way is definitely not an option.

This is driving me crazy -- and apparantly quite a few people, as I've googled for the past 15 minutes and found this question asked over and over again without an answer(even found an answer from me pereviously stated I don't know how to do this, but an alternative that worked in the given situation). Surely someone more mathematically minded knows how to do this? If so, please blog about it and get your name at the top of google. :-)
