I had a kinda similar problem. I didn't manage to use a very complex xml strucutre that i received from the webservice directly as dataProvider for the tree using datadescriptors and stuff.
I'm now creating a new, simple XML dataProvider object based on the complex one to make the tree work as it should.
maybe not the most elegant way but it works.
Maybe that will do also for you?! Just a thought.
Use labelFunction(); It can handle any format xml.
Also, I advise using plain e4x XML instead of arrayCollections of arrayCollections. XML is hierarchical by its own nature.
Can the xml be loaded on demand? So only load the child nodes when the user expands a node? How do I add nodes to an XMLList?

It's possible. One of the solution described at book from Farata Systems "RIA development with Adobe Flex and Java"
