There is no built in way to "Move" the photos from a camera card at import in Lightroom.
Note for you and other Lr users who want to do move
I will make a batch file that will transfert and erase my photos in a temp directory, and import them from there with Lr (move will work then)
I will point out that there are legitimate reasons to avoid doing a "move" from camera card to computer. I will also point out that not everyone agrees.
The reasons you might want to avoid doing a "move" from a camera card is that if you have any type of problem — power outage, other glitch, corruption of photo (which happens when a card reader goes bad or USB cable goes bad or hard disk goes bad, just read these forums to see many many many many many many examples) — then you have no photo on the camera card and either no photo on the hard disk or a corrupted photo on the hard disk.
Yes you are right, and thank for sharing your idea, but I dont like to have to restart my SD card everytime I download my pictures ... and go to explorer to erase them.
I already working on my batch file, and it will incorporate a question to erase or not erase after the file transfert, in case something goes bad.
Probably the best thing to do is to just format the card in your camera after you copy the pictures.
Yes, it's a pain that Lr does not have a delete-after-import feature (which is significantly different than a "move-during-import" feature).
Delete after import would be:
* safe (because imported file integrity and backup could be validated prior to removal from card)
* convenient (since you don't have to remember to format your card after importing).
* eliminate the potential for human error which results in problems when user forgets to format card, or formats it without validating imported images first.
Move during import (i.e. Lr's "Move" import option) is:
* risky (it's possible file is not read from card properly, and if subsequently deleted, you would lose the only good copy of your photo).
(which is why it's not a supported option)
Thanks for your comments
I made my batch file (under windows) and the batch file copy my pictures on a temp directory, show me that files where copied
and ask me to delete them, start automatically Lr in import mode at that temp directory in MOVE mode.
My only little problem for now is that I have to manually start the batch file, the autorun.inf is always block by my antivirus, otherwise
at the insertion of a SD card, the batch file would run automatically
Good for you.... may your power never fail...
