I have exact the same problem. It worked under LR 5.5, then suddenly it failed. Upgraded to 5.6 it worked for 1 day and now I have the same issue under 5.6.

BTW.: this is happening on a WinTel machine.
I do have the same Problem with LR5.7 under Windows 7 64bit.
Cannot import any photos anymore. As soon as I try to import Photos LR5.7 crashes. Reinstalled the Programm (repair Programm) did not help, still the same Problem.
I my case the crash happened due to a connected Android Phone. After disconneting the Android Phone from the PC, the crash during Import did not occur anymore.
That worked!!I just did a search for the same problem and found this page. Unplugging my Android phone stopped the crash. I suppose the Library import is looking at the phone as a disk drive or something. Thanks for the answer!
Same situation on my Desktop but do not have Android. Application Error: Application Hanging Event 1002 Task cat. 101
Did repair & still hung. Deleted Lightroom & re-installed, still hung. Re-booted system, still hung. Have on Laptop with no problem (So far).
