Derjis Aug 25, 2014 8:08 AM (in response to Derjis)I should make it clear that this is only for our OSX boxes; I updated the PCs a while ago, and have had no problems.

2. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
jstrawn Aug 25, 2014 10:08 AM (in response to Derjis)I have to update adobe (and other) software constantly as part of my QA work on Pr and really never have problems where a new version just won't work once it's publicly released. But our users have reported such occurrences here, so it's a legitimate fear. The difference is probably because I keep most of my testing environments clean of as much other clutter as a I can and restore back to 'clean' images regularly, especially before major updates. That's probably not realistic for most users though, and I agree with the more conventional wisdom that says never update in the middle of an important project or when you otherwise can't afford to troubleshoot some things, even if it's just feature design changes or other things that aren't necessarily bugs.

3. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Derjis Aug 25, 2014 10:24 AM (in response to jstrawn)I tend to be overly wary about these things... We had a minor catastrophe last year when a PPro update completely ganked Canon MXF spanning on our machines; spanned clips were being read out of order, so literally every project we had done prior to the update was completely screwed if our clips were longer than 5min. At that time, there was no easy way to get ahold of an earlier, working version of PPro, either... Arg. Don't get me started.

Hah. I'm with Derjis on this one (though I do appreciate the even-handed tone). And it's not just plug-in incompatibilities etc. from a dirty system. Updating is a constant nailbiter for us, never knowing which bugs (yes, true bugs) are going to pop up and wreak havoc with our workflows. Like that time Premiere introduced random audio noise into crossfades on export. Or like how Speedgrade 2014 didn't launch on Retina MacBook Pros.
Derjis - I'm curious, have you made the jump? We're finally ready to expand our pilot station's 2014 version throughout the studio, but would love to know if you've encountered any issues. We're primarily Canon MXF too.

5. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Derjis Oct 1, 2014 11:37 AM (in response to Nick_HE)Ah, the ol' random audio glitch on crossfades; I remember it well...
No major issues to speak of, Nick. The upgrade has gone smoothly on our 2013 MacPro. I've noticed the odd audio glitch with h264 .MP4 exports straight out of PPro on Win7Pro (audio randomly dropping out, or not exporting at all), but sending it to the AME queue functions as a workaround.

Nick_HE Oct 1, 2014 11:56 AM (in response to Derjis)Thanks Derjis, sounds good.
I'm going to do it! Right now. Hmm. Or maybe on three. One, two... ok just a sec. Deep breath.....

I think it is /was a good idea to do them one by one.
From anecdotal evidence...I would expect you will run into an issue on one or the other but hopefully not.
Let us all know how you get on. It will be helpful ( anecdotally) for other Mac usres.

Derjis Oct 6, 2014 12:41 PM (in response to Derjis)Wowzers, based on what I'm reading in the forums, I should probably sit this update out...

I'm not seeing many problems. Which forum are you speaking of? This one?
Thanks,

Derjis Oct 6, 2014 12:49 PM (in response to Kevin Monahan)October Update: Playback is green.
Playback and stability problems with the october update (2014.1) on OS X 10.8.5
How can I get AVCHD clips working after latest Premiere Pro Update (cc 2014)
That's just what I found on the very first page of "Discussions". Enough to convince me to hold off on the update, since everything is currently working pretty smoothly...

12. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Kevin Monahan Oct 6, 2014 12:57 PM (in response to Derjis)Hi Derjis,
Thanks for the links. Looks like we have all those posts covered, so we don't know if these are actually issues affecting everyone yet. The last post has been solved already.
So far, most issues can be solved by updating video drivers and/or trashing preferences.
Thanks for your concern,
Kevin

Kevin Monahan Oct 6, 2014 1:03 PM (in response to Derjis)Sounds good, Derjis. Though I encourage everyone to update, I fully understand if you don't want to jump in the pool at the first opportunity.
Thanks,

15. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Mark Mapes Oct 6, 2014 1:05 PM (in response to Derjis)- Solved by updating graphics driver
- Waiting to see if it's also a driver issue. Given that the user is on 10.8.5, which is a year old, I like the odds that a fresh driver will resolve the issue.
- In the most recent post (Oct 6, 2014 11:59 AM), the user reports that he's not certain which version he's on.
- Resolved by renaming folder. And this is not new to 2014.1

16. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Derjis Oct 6, 2014 1:07 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Orrrrrr we could just wait, not do anything and avoid having to troubleshoot, rename media folders, update drivers, etc.

17. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
KMueller Oct 6, 2014 1:14 PM (in response to Derjis)Having serious trouble with fresh created project and .mp4 files coming in with no audio. Renaming to .mov is a workaround but no solution.
No bashing i love the software and flexibility but i can understand people beeing scared about version 0.0 updates. I never would update with unfinished projects.

Kevin Monahan Oct 6, 2014 1:18 PM (in response to KMueller)Hi K Mueller,
What happens if you change the name of the folder the media is in?
Thanks,

^^^ This. Time = money :: downtime = no money. If we weren't using Adobe stuff to earn a living, I'd be a lot less concerned about installing Day 0 updates...
I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again, but Adobe seriously needs to have some sort of compensation system in place for customers to recoup money for lost/wasted time spent troubleshooting buggy releases. With a subscription model, we're all paying Adobe to provide us with a service (i.e. working software). If Adobe can't supply that service for a given period of time, our contracts should be extended --- if our boxes are down for a half-day while we try to figure out why AVCHD files don't work all of a sudden, then it's only fair that our contract be extended by a half-day.

That sounds like a reasonable request to me. I would say it seems fair to get a free month point product deduction if you have to waste half a day, but please don't quote me on that. It's mostly users and point product people in here with no way to design and enact such a policy. Have you tried sending the idea in to some official avenue of customer support, for example: Contact Customer Care
I can't think of any better places to send it, but if anyone can, please do tell. (CEO's personal # ? --- kidding, I don't have that, sad to say.) If I can find the proper channel internally, I'll submit the request for you myself.

21. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Nick_HE Oct 8, 2014 12:59 PM (in response to jstrawn)As a start, is there some sort of public-facing bug tracker or continuously updated list of known issues? Something easier than poring over forum posts?

22. Re: I'm scared. Someone hold me.
Derjis Oct 13, 2014 1:27 PM (in response to Derjis)*sigh* looks like yet another Adobe "update" that we'll be sitting out. Remind me again why "software as service" is so much better than buying the program outright? It was something about "always having access to all of the latest and greatest updates to your* software!", if I remember correctly...?
*our. "your" incorrectly implies some sort of ownership.

Thanks for the suggestion, jstrawn, I honestly appreciate it! I'll broach the subject next time I'm on with Adobe support; given Adobe's seeming lack of concern for customer experience, I don't know how much weight my suggestion will carry, but worth mentioning, I suppose! I know that Apple somehow became THE tech company to emulate, but following them down the garden path with regards to listening to your customers. People don't use their iPhones to earn a living!
