    Indesign complex indexing automation

    mrpinkpix

Hi, I'm working on a catalog with products references in each page.

I would like to automate the index according to the model below:

Reference | Name | Page number.

But the difficulty is that the name won't be exactly the same that the one written in the catalog and the good names will be stored in a excel database like this: Reference | Name

Is there a solution for this ?

      Thanks!

I don't think I can help you with this, but it seems a little unclear what you have, so maybe if you give some detail, someone will be able to give you an answer.

So, does that mean that you will have a name (let's  just call it Smith) on page 43, you will generate an index that reads:

          Smith...........................43

…but you want to automate a process that will read something like Jones from a database and change the Smith's to:

          Jones...........................43

…without changing it on the document pages?

            That's right,

For example, on page 5 of the catalog we could read: Ref 123456 - GRAPHIC

            CARD 2GB POWERCOLOR HD7850 PCS AND POWERDRIVER - 207,40 €

And on the index, because the products' names are too long, we will have:

            Ref 1234 - GC 2GB HD7850  - 207,40 €

May be the best way is to use an xml file.

            Thanks.

You must find a way to find a unique match between text from layout and text from the data entry from the excel file. For example the reference numbers? Do they correspond? If not, perhaps a combined search of parts from entry from excel file could solve the right match in the layout file. The idea is that, as soon as you can find such a rule of matching, the index can be done by scripting.
