installation won't complete on macbook

Have been trying to update Flash Player on my Macbook Pro retina, and it's all OK until the final installation when at getting to 50% installed it starts asking me to close Safari even though I already have. Each time I click on 'retry' it goes up a few more percent until it gets to 97% and it won't go any further.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it hasn't worked.

Once you quit Safari, how do you restore it.  Everything runs on Safari.  It louses me up every time I try.
