If I move a Smart Object file to a new location (another folder or another computer), must I also move the original RAW file with it to maintain compatibility between them? How close must the original RAW file be? I assume their names must be compatible.
For teaching purposes, I need to make copies of files I use for teaching. If I am using a file that is a Smart Object, does a copy of the original RAW file need to accompany it into the same folder? I may need to return to the RAW version in class.
No, absolutely not. The Smart Object already contains a whole copy of the original raw file in it (that's why they are so large). Smart Objects are not linked to whatever originated them; they include an encapsulated copy.
Thanks. You are absolutely correct. I never noticed that large file size.
