1. Re: Acrobat PDF fillable forms do not seem to work with third party PDF readers. Any way to avoid this?
George_Johnson Sep 6, 2014 10:58 PM (in response to sarah989)There really is nothing Adobe can do about how non-Adobe software functions. The PDF standard is no longer controlled by Adobe, it's controlled by ISO. Some PDF viewers choose to have no support for forms, some have pretty good support, and some (like Preview) are simply malevolent. There is a lot of non-Adobe software that creates bad PDFs, and a lot that doesn't have nearly the support of Acrobat/Reader. Again, this isn't a problem Adobe can solve.
Regarding, allowing image formats with the buttonImportIcon method and Reader, I know a feature request has been submitted for this. Reader 11 is the first version since Reader 5 that supports this, so I have hope for the future. In the mean time, it's fairly easy nowadays to convert an image to PDF. Even Preview can do it.

George_Johnson Sep 6, 2014 11:11 PM (in response to sarah989)Also, if you set up a field to allow rich text formatting, the user is able to specify almost any font that's available on their system. They just have to display the Properties bar (Ctrl+E) while the field has the focus.

Test Screen Name Sep 7, 2014 1:31 AM (in response to George_Johnson)I agree it's a huge problem. But which engineers aren't paying attention? Adobe can't control what the makers of third party tools do or don't do. There is an international standard for forms, which has not changed in many years, which everyone should follow, and they just don't.
Your only realistic option is to insist that people use Adobe Reader - that they install it, know how to use it, and understand that some browsers ignore it.
Where Adobe do let us down is that on mobile devices the Adobe Reader products do not have full parity with desktop products e.g. with JavaScript.

sarah989 Sep 8, 2014 11:28 PM (in response to Test Screen Name)Thanks for everyone's help. Didn't mean to blame Adobe engineers. you guys are awesome!
It's just very frustrating at the moment because so many third party readers are out there that are not compatible with Acrobat PDF forms. Wouldn't it be great if there was an online Adobe Reader that all Adobe PDF files automatically opened in?
