Timeline & Mark in/out Issue (picture)

    perfectblue Community Member

The first issue is with setting a custom mark in/out for the footage in the source window, adding it to the project timeline, and then going back later to edit the in/out markers. On some of my footage, If I want to go back and edit the mark in/out, I notice that the rest of the footage seems to be lost. For example, in the screen shot below the footage is about 7 seconds in total. I specified a mark in and mark out initially, but if I go back to change where these marks are it will not let me. In this screen shot I am attempting to set a mark in where the cursor is but nothing is happening. Other source clips do not have this issue.

The second issue I am having involves the timeline. I notice when I drag and drop blocks of footage, sometimes one clip will cannibalize the other. In the example below I am merely trying to swap the positions of two blocks of footage, instead the footage is cannibalized.

      Thanks in advance

Your Clip maybe getting (head and tail)  blocked in the timeline , preventing you changing the In and Out .

Use an appropriate  Trim Tool in the timeline or the Trim Monitor.. if you want to change the I and O

Other wise clear the clip he  dand tail.

You are overlaying the clip and thats why you are "cannabilising" it.   Drag it into clear space away from the other clip then position it carefully (with Snap ON)

To insert one clip (or group of selected clips) before other clips on the Timeline, hold Ctrl on Windows or CMD on Mac while dragging.

I suspect that spending a few minutes on this page in the help might be time well-spent: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Rearranging clips in a sequence

shooternz Thank you for your reply. Regarding your response "

There seems a few ways to fix this issue with the blocked head and tail. Here is what I have found.

              1. Separating the clip on the timeline so I can go back to the source editor and specify new heads and tails markers as shown in the image below.

              2.jpg

              2. When editing on the timeline hold the ctrl key to modify the head/tail

              3.jpg

or  deleting the clip and starting over as you mentioned. Are these basically all of my options? The main problem I am having is I really enjoy how precise you can set the markers in the source window. But if your clip is blocked at the head / tail there doesn't seem to be an option to precisely modify it while keeping the clip in place on the timeline.

Those are the long way around. The tool for the kind edit you're talking about is the Ripple Edit tool. You should also become familiar with the Rolling Edit tool. Paired with the Trim Mode view in the Program Monitor and the use of "JKL" editing, you'll find that you can be every bit as precise when editing in the Timeline & Program Monitor as you can working through the Source Monitor. The relatively new Ripple Trim Previous/Next Edit to Playhead shortcuts are also very powerful and efficient.

To learn more about all of these, consult Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Trimming clips and watch the video tutorials that that page links to.
