THG_BO Sep 21, 2014 8:37 AM (in response to rawgore)Hello,
I had the same problem with LR 5.5 - this was a horrible release for me. But LR 5.6 works stable for at least 1-2 hours. I never had any crashes with LR 5.4. Check the release notes and may be give LR 5.4 a try.

rawgore Sep 21, 2014 8:40 AM (in response to THG_BO)But it was fine for over a month on my computer, why is it only crashing now? I'd really like to diagnose this problem so I can fix it and go back to Lightroom 5.6 being functional.
I've since tried to delete Lightroom and re-install it from scratch, it did not help. I can barely go 5 minutes before a crash.

THG_BO Sep 21, 2014 11:47 AM (in response to rawgore)Hello,
try to delete all preview caches (Preview, Smart, ACR) and optimize the catalog. Perhapst, it works.

rawgore Sep 21, 2014 12:25 PM (in response to THG_BO)Thanks, I just tried that (deleted all preview caches) and it didn't work. After a restart, Lightroom still crashed within a few minutes. It's completely random, it happens no matter which tool I'm using in the Develop module.

ssprengel Sep 21, 2014 12:40 PM (in response to rawgore)You also might try starting a new catalog in case something is haywire with the previous one, just as a test, of course.
And check your disk for file-system corruption with chkdsk/scandisk or whatever it is called nowadays.

9. Re: Lightroom 5.6 Suddenly Crashing Repeatedly
rawgore Sep 21, 2014 1:15 PM (in response to ssprengel)Starting a new catalog appears to have resolved the issue. I have yet to experience a crash with the new catalog, and I've been pushing it hard to try to crash it.
However I can't have my old catalog borked! There's thousands of pictures in there! I tried "Optimizing" the catalog, but it doesn't appear to have helped. Besides, when I did that, it said the catalog was last "optimized" earlier today, and this trouble started last night.
I was fine when I assumed that this was a Lightroom problem, but if it's actually a catalog problem, then I'm starting to feel the grip of panic seizing my throat. I HATE the fact that Lightroom forces me to use its catalog, and this is exactly why! I don't want my photos held hostage in a buggy catalog!!!

10. Re: Lightroom 5.6 Suddenly Crashing Repeatedly
THG_BO Sep 21, 2014 1:47 PM (in response to rawgore)Hello,
you can save your developments outside the LR catalog using XMP sidecar files. All needed infomation (development settings, flags, color tags,...) is stored in this file (except (smart) collections). XMPs can be generated automatically (Catalog settings / Metadata) or manualy usings Ctrl-S.
You can mark (all) images and export them as new catalog. This will create a new catalog including the collections.

11. Re: Lightroom 5.6 Suddenly Crashing Repeatedly
ssprengel Sep 21, 2014 3:08 PM (in response to rawgore)Make a new catalog and then import from the old catalog and see if it works, then import from the previous new catalog, so everything's back in one place, again.

rawgore Sep 23, 2014 10:36 AM (in response to THG_BO)I imported all photos to a new catalog, and set it to write XMP files for all photos. Now everything seems to be working fine again. Thank you.

THG_BO Sep 23, 2014 12:47 PM (in response to Robert Huffman)Hello Robert,
if you need a fast solution, try to start with new catalog and do your work. You can later import your existing catalog into the new one or import your old images into to new catalog using xmp side car files.
And try the diffent solutions we provide in this article if you have enought time to do so.

Robert Huffman Sep 25, 2014 6:22 PM (in response to THG_BO)This didnt work…could edit a for a few photo dozen photos then crashes…this BS…every since your last update this LR has been buggy, slow, locks up…I have a dual processor mac pro with 32 gigs of memory so my machine shouldnt be a limitation…..I dont have this problem with other editors…you guys are getting like Apple …doing a piss poor job of QA….
My dad uses LR and has issues and so my friends…this works like freeware..

kes1974 Oct 1, 2014 2:02 AM (in response to Robert Huffman)I have completely the same problem, brand new machine iMac upgraded to 32gb, no problems for 35 days and lightroom crashed the day I upgraded to 10.9.5, the hard drive then wouldn't restart, apple then wiped it and reinstalled, since then crashing about 6 times a day and causing the whole machine to reboot. I have a corrupted catalogue now so have had to rebuild a new one and problems are still happening.....?!?
