read out loud

I am not able to change the read out loud settings. The voice from microsoft text to speech settings that I've selected doesn't work when selected in reader. As well, reader won't let me change the reading pace. Basically, the moment I uncheck the default checkbox for reading options under preferences, the read out loud feature stops working.

OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

Reader: 11.0.09

Does the Narrator work with other applications? Are you able to adjust the Voice Settings in Narrator?

The problems arise when I try to change the default checkbox in the Reader preferences - either by picking a difference voice or changing the pitch or words/min. Here are screenshots of the Text to Speech Settings and the Reader Preferences.

Try seeing if Protect Mode is affecting this under Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced). Try temporarily unchecking Enable Protected Mode at startup.

Thanks!! Turning off Enable Protected Mode at Startup seems to let me change the Reading options (voice, pitch, words per min). One more quick q: the reader pauses at the end of a line when text is in columns (instead of reading till the end of a sentence). Is there a way to rectify this? I'm not experiencing this on a Win 7 64-bit system. I did notice that the PDF is not tagged, which makes a much better reading experience - this could be related to the problem.
