Select parent tag or child tag works sometimes, but often it doesn't

What do you have to do in DW CS6 to make the "select parent tag" or "select child tag" work reliably?

Sometimes when I use Ctrl-[ or Ctrl-] or the buttons on the left of the editor & it works, other times nothing at all happens. I can't figure out what I'm doing differently. Do you have to click between container tags instead of inside the container's tags?

It works OK for me in CS6 12.2 build #6006 on Windows.
Do you have latest updates for your CS6?
Are you working with valid code? If DW sees unbalanced tags, it might get confused as to which is parent/child.

I tells me I have the latest version (this is on windows too), but my version is 12.0 build 5861. Wonder why the updater says mine is up to date?

However after running code validation & fixing a couple of things it seems to be working now. Guess that was it. I'm surprised though that it didn't highlight that unnecessary closing tag I had in this file.

12.0 is the perpetual licensed version.
12.2 is from the creative cloud.
