It will be added at some point, probably in the near future in the meantime I'd suggest using the DNG converter to convert your raw files into DNGs which LR can read. Keep all your native raws too for when they are supported.

The D810 is already supported by Lr 5.6,
Matty, did you import your files using Nikon software? That can break them for Lightroom.
Yes, I used ViewNX2 which has always worked fine with RAW photos from my D7000 for importing into Lightroom.

Yeah you do not want Nikon's software to touch your images at all. Either import using Lightroom or use the system built in importer (usually simply dragging and dropping in Finder/Explorer). Nikon's software, especially when it is not the absolute latest version, often corrupts your images in subtle ways that make them unreadable in third party software. Nikon's software sometimes writes extra data in the nef files, which trips other software up. There is a utility somewhere that reverses the damage but you're probably better off reimporting.
You can use Nikon software with D810 images as long as it is the version of Nikon software that came with the D810, not an older version from your previous camera. Of course you can also just avoid Nikon software altogether.
You can fix the corrupted files using the utility from here:
Thanks for all your help - really appreciate it.
Just one further question - if I install the version of ViewNX that came with the camera, will that keep my files and folders generated under the 'old' ViewNX?
Again, thanks everyone for your help and advice.
I uninstalled the old version of ViewNX2 and installed the version of NX that came with the camera (although I don't understand why this should be different from the existing version for which I had executed all the updates) and yes, LR can now read the RAW files.
I also tried converting the files originally imported in NX using the old version, but no luck - they are in an unsupported format for the DNG program. I guess I'll have to try and fix the corruption using the above link. Luckily they were not that important.
