Use the uninstaller, then the full installer ("Netscape") from https://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/#sp
If that doesn't fix the problem, tell us what "won't work" exactly means.

ok. I tried this a couple of times. Each time it said download successful (see attachment), and the Adobe shockwave player 12.1 shows in my programs. When I go to use it to open a jigsaw puzzle game I like, I get a circle with a slash across it, the same symbol I get in the attached graphic when I try to confirm the program is on my computer.
Any help would be appreciated.

You cannot attach screenshots to email replies. You need to sign in to the forum, then use the camera icon in the forum editor to insert a screenshot.

Sorry. you can see I am not familiar with forums.
Here are the screen shots. Though it said installation was successful, and the program is listed in my programs in the control panel, something seems to be preventing it from working. I have used shockwave player many times before, and my computer has had no problem with updates for shockwave player in the past. It was only after I updated other programs on this computer that it wouldn't work.

I tried to provide the URL, but the moderators rejected it for some reason I don't understand.
The puzzle is found daily at TheDay.com newspaper, under entertainment, under jigsaw. when I try to go to the puzzle, it just gives me the same circle with a slash through it that I posted in a screenshot earlier, when I try to verify that Adobe Shockwave player is on my computer.

These forums get a lot of spam lately, so unfortunately some moderators are very quick to reject posts that only contain a hyperlink. I have been fighting this for a while, without success. Sorry for that!

The second screenshot you posted may indicated a problem with IE11; see http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2716529
The article above, and the Fixit it contains, is for IE10 on Windows 8. However, the same applies to IE11 on Windows 7.
If you don't want to do the registry change manually, I can provide a registry script that does that for you.

Would clicking on the fixit solution work for my system, since you said the fixit solution is for IE10 on Windows 8?
If there is any chance it would not, I would be grateful for the registry script from you. If you are sure it would work okay for me, I am willing to try that.

How critical is it to back up registry first? I tried to follow the instructions, but when you get to the screen after typing in regedit.exe, there are many folders to choose from. None stood out as the right one, so I went no further.

Backing up the registry before making any changes to it is essential! A System Restore Point will do that.
Download, unzip, then run the registry script from https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/630c7d1a-20ec-4dec-a935-6bb260b671a6
There is no guarantee that this will fix your problem, but it is worth a try.
