If on windows, use the "esc" button to select the cell or the text. If you select a cell, use the arrow keys to select more cells. Whole table, select one cell then "Ctrl A" to select all the table. The fat arrow is the same as the one in Word, it's sometimes driving me crazy too.
Sorry..I should have said that I'm Mac OS X, using CS6...
tried pressing esc, but it had no effect..thank you!
On Mac If you click the cell, then press esc, it should work too. Then use shift+arrow key to select more cells.
On my pc it's Shift+Esc. You can check which key combination is defined on your computer as follows:
1. Go to the keyboard shortcuts dialog: Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts
2. Click 'Show Set'.
3. In the text file that was opened, search 'Toggle Cell'. At 'Default' you see which key selects the cell that you clicked in.
Esc works on Mac and Windows. The key is to make sure that you have the Type tool as your active tool. Click in the cell, press Esc, and the cell will be selected. You can then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select other cells or hold down the shift key while using the arrow keys to select multiple cells.

Unless it was changed in the keyboard shorcut editor.
