I am not sure what you mean by
enormous clipping masks
Could you provide a screenshot to illustrate?
So I'll have a page full of pushpoints, with clipping masks applied to each to provide a photographic backdrop:
But then if I try and select the adjacent pushpoint elements, it will also select the clipping masks, despite the fact that it doesn't actually touch its containing object.
This has lead to quite a bit of inconvenience in many circumstances. Any idea, apart from locking the layers? I need the clipping masks to also be selected when their container layer is selected, but not the rest.
Thanks in advance!
Quite frankly the screenshots do not make the issue fully clear to me, they are fragmentary, the relation of the objects in the Layers Panel and the other screenshots seems unclear, why multiply the Smart object and not the Solid Color Layer …?
Nothing to do with the blending modes. It's just to show that when selecting an area around an object which has a clipping mask applied to it, if that area intersects the full dimensions of the clipped layer, then the clipped layer will be selected. Don't really know how else to explain it...
Well, as far as I’m concerned a screenshot that actually made the spatial and Layer structure relationships clear (of the whole Canvas and with other Layers Panel Panel Options for example) would have seemed helpful.
Anyway, I think what you are after is not in the cards as it is, a Layer being clipping masked affects the auto-select when clicking but not when click-dragging.
You could convert the stacks to Smart Objects, though.
Or post a Feature request over at
As for the issue of the Blend Mode: Is the multiplying shutterstock image clipping masked to the rectangle layer the same image as the background?
