Inserting audio from library locks up Captivate 6 & 8

    SlayBach Community Member

What gives. Captivate 3 does not have this issue!

In Captivate 6 & 8, if I drag an audio file form the library to a slide, and the slide has slightly more time in it than the audio, everything locks up. Anyway around this outside of cutting some time off the slide? Anyway to shave a .5 second off of every slide without having to do this one slide at a time?

This has cropped up after exporting multiple audio files to a normalizer tool and reimporting the audio. That tool must cut a few milliseconds off each audio file and instead of Captivate decreasing the slide time by a hair, it locks up unless I first shorten the slide time, drag the audio to the file, and the tell captivate to lengthen the time.

          Hi there

Have you used a second monitor with Captivate?

Normally when you drag an audio clip to replace one, Captivate prompts you with a dialog that looks like the one below:

          tmp1.png

At least, it should as long as you haven't enabled the "Don't ask me this again" option.

It's possible that maybe this dialog is trying to display but is on a non-existent second monitor. And if that's the case, Captivate will appear to lock up because you aren't seeing the dialog.

          Cheers... Rick

I had deleted all audio tracks before trying to drag the new audio to a slide. IF I had turned that off, how does one turn it back on? I am using 2 monitors but I don't see this message. If I cut a little time off the slide and then drag it into the slide, I get the 3 choices, one being to extended the duration. Thanks for the ideas though!

              Rick,

I do get that warning if I drag audio to a slide which already has audio, and yes I am using two monitors.

Rod Ward also suggested a possible two monitor issue, but nothing appears to be hidden under the main work area. Eventually the Slide Audio dialog pops up, but this takes 10 seconds, and there is no reason to pop this up since all I want to do is drag an audio file into a slide, not edit it.

I ran a test. Exported audio on slide 1, deleted the audio on slide 1 and from the library, imported the exact same audio file back into the captivate 6 library, dragged the audio to slide 1 and the audio is inserted, slide length stays the same BUT it pauses with a little arrow and "+" icon and then in about 10 seconds the Audio Slide panel pops up. If I say 'Close" to that everything appears OK until I move to a new slide or run that slide to the end - then it all hangs up!

I thought perhaps the tool MP3gain that I am using to normalize my audio files was to blame until I exported and imported the exact file via Captivate 6 (and 8 for that matter) and still have the same issue.

What happens if you drag all dialogs to your main monitor and then disconnect your second monitor entirely?

Do you still suffer the same issues with the audio? Or does it then behave as expected?

If it does, your issue may simply be some kind of driver conflict.

                  Hi Rod,

Not sure I understand completely. All of my work is being done on my main monitor - I only have a mail program running on the 2nd monitor, and nothing from Captivate is appearing on that 2nd monitor. So would it still help debug this issue to unplug that monitor?

What have you got to lose?  If nothing changes, then you can forget about the issue being due to the second monitor.  On the other hand if performance improves, you know it has something to do with that monitor or the drivers it requires.  Either way you'll know something.

Did not help disconnecting the 2nd monitor (heard the familiar Windows 7 tone when I pulled the plug to indicate the computer knew it was no longer available).

Another option outside of adding a tiny bit of silence to the end of each audio file so force the system to prompt me about lengthening the slide duration, would be to shave a few milliseconds off the end of the each slide (en mass). Is this possible without doing this one slide at a time by dragging the right end of the Slide row in teh timeline?
